Job summary

Van Dyke Public Schools is seeking a dedicated Special Education Paraprofessional to support instructional and behavioral goals for students with disabilities.

Role Overview
Special Education Paraprofessionals are essential members of the educational team who provide support with instructional, behavioral, physical, communication, daily living skills, and access to the general education curriculum to students with disabilities. They help create inclusive learning environments and ensure that all students have access to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE), as mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Supervision and Collaboration
Paraprofessionals work under the direct supervision of certified staff, including:

  • The classroom teacher and professional support staff who provide instructional direction and daily task assignments, including the schedule for the paraprofessional to follow each day.
  • The building principal, who oversees general building operations, ensures paraprofessionals deliver appropriate support per IEP and classroom teacher direction, and evaluates paraprofessionals’ professional abilities and conduct.
  • The special education administrators who ensure that paraprofessional supports align with IEP goals, district policies, and legal compliance.

Primary Responsibilities

While responsibilities may vary based on student needs and program types, typical duties include:

  • Assisting with the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Supporting students academically in individual, small-group, or whole-group settings
  • Assisting with behavior management strategies and Positive Behavior Intervention Plans
  • Monitoring and documenting student progress and behavior
  • Promoting student independence and engagement
  • Supporting communication and social skills development
  • Providing physical assistance, including mobility and personal care, as needed
  • Ensuring student safety in all school environments (classrooms, hallways, playground, enrichment, etc.)

Daily Responsibilities

  • Arrive at work with enough time to be at your assigned location when your shift begins.
  • Remember to clock YOURSELF in and out each day
  • Be present and prepared for the entire shift.
  • Follow the schedule developed by the supervising teacher/building administrator.
  • Assist students with academic tasks, behavior regulation, communication, and mobility as outlined in their IEP.
  • Support students to learn skills across settings (classroom, hallway, lunchroom, playground).
  • Communicate student needs and progress to the supervising teacher daily.
  • TSAs must report to the administration if their student(s) are absent, to be reassigned for the day.
  • Assist in the collection of data as directed by the supervising teacher (behavioral, academic, toileting, etc.).
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information (FERPA & HIPAA laws apply). Confidentiality expectations are that students are not talked about in front of staff, students, or others who don’t have an educational need to know the information shared.
  • Follow the lead of the classroom teacher or special education teacher.
  • Engage positively with students and avoid distractions (e.g., phones, side conversations).
  • Support all students respectfully and professionally.
  • Never leave a student unattended unless directed to do so.
  • Participate in instructional delivery by prompting, modeling, and encouraging independence.
  • Be flexible and ready to support various students or classrooms as needs arise.

Physical Expectations

  • Sit and/or stand for prolonged periods
  • Reach, lift, stand, walk, carry materials, stoop
  • Get on the floor with students
  • Lift up to 50 pounds with assistance
  • Be CPI trained and appropriately restrain a student with a team if necessary
  • Move around the classroom and the building with ease and agility
  • Respond quickly to children who leave the designated area or classroom
