Multi-Skilled Carpenter - Des Moines, IA
Ace Handyman Services Des Moines $23–$30/hr + bonuses · Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm
You already know how to do the work. Here's what we do for you.
You've got the skills. What you probably don't have is a Sunday night that isn't spent writing bids, a Friday that isn't spent chasing a customer for money, and a phone that isn't ringing at 9pm about a job you finished three weeks ago.
That's the part we handle.
The money
- Vehicle and tool stipend, on top of your hourly
- 401(k) with a 4% company match after one year and minimum hours
- Bonuses that reward the work you're already doing
- Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. Weekends not required.
- No on-call. When you're done, you're done.
- 7 observed holidays a year.
The support
- The office handles marketing, scheduling, billing, collections, and customer service. You show up, do the work, and go home.
- Company shirts provided — you're not buying your own uniform.
- Company credit card for approved job expenses. You're not floating material costs on your personal Visa.
- Supplemental insurance through Aflac — find the coverage that actually fits your needs.
- Employee Assistance Program — discounted counseling, pharmacy, and legal resources for you.
- Room to move up. We'd rather grow a lead craftsman than hire one.
The work
- Small to medium projects for homeowners and small businesses across the Des Moines metro — Ankeny, Altoona, Bondurant, Urbandale, Clive, West Des Moines, and the surrounding communities.
- A typical week: hang a door, patch and texture drywall, install trim, swap a faucet, replace a ceiling fan, repair a deck, repair a light at the daycare center, install grab bars and handrails for a customer who wants to stay in their own home. Rarely the same thing twice.
- You'll usually run more than one job in a day, and you'll run them yourself — plan the work, pull your own material list, make the store run once, and keep moving. Nobody's standing over you.
What we need from you
Must-haves
- 5+ years hands-on carpentry or remodeling — finish and rough, plus general home repair: drywall, doors, trim, and fixture swaps
- Real depth in several of these: tile and grout, light plumbing, light electrical, deck work, exterior repair — enough that you could show someone else how
- Your own hand and power tools
- A valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and a reliable, insured truck or van
- Comfortable using a tablet for scheduling, job photos, timecards, and customer signatures — that's how the work gets documented and how you get paid
- The ability to run a full day on your own across multiple stops and stay productive
- The ability to talk with a customer like a neighbor: explain the options, be straight about what it'll take, and call the office when a job is running long
- Good judgment about scope — you recognize permit-required plumbing, electrical, and structural work, and you diagnose before you demo
- You work safely with ladders and power tools whether or not anyone's watching
- Comfortable and respectful in customers' homes, including a lot of older homeowners who want to stay in theirs
- You want to keep getting better at the craft
- No smoking, vaping, or substances on customer property
- A clean background check — you're going into people's homes and businesses, and that trust is the whole business
Nice-to-haves
- Residential remodeling or customer-facing repair experience
- Experience mentoring or training less-experienced craftsmen
- Light commercial or property management work
