Job summary

Health First is seeking a Surgical Technologist to support operating room activities under the direction of a registered nurse. You will prepare rooms with instruments, maintain the sterile field, and assist with routine perioperative tasks.

The role requires familiarity with sterile techniques, ability to work in a fast-paced OR, and collaboration with surgical teams. Training and BLS certification are required prior to start date, with on-site responsibilities in Florida facilities.

Qualifications

• Completion of Health First’s On-The-Job Training Program for Surgical Technician or graduate of a Surgical Technologist program.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider prior to start date.
• 1 year of work experience as a surgical tech or surgical assistant (preferred).

Responsibilities

To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by performing a variety of technical activities related to patient care, as well as support activities in the operating room under the direction of a registered nurse.

To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by performing a variety of technical activities related to patient care, as well as support activities in the operating room under the direction of a registered nurse.

Primary Accountabilities

• Perform a variety of duties in an operating room observing proper techniques to include preparing rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment; open sterile supplies and arrange sterile setups for operations.
• Create, maintain, and terminate sterile field for surgical procedures.
• Properly handle and care for all instruments and equipment. Check materials and equipment for proper functioning and adequacy; report faulty equipment and instruments per policy.
• Assist with precepting new technical personnel.
• Attend in-services and mandatory meetings.
• Cooperate with the nurse in the individualized plan of care for each patient.
• Anticipate needs of surgeon and surgical assistants in the operating room, passing instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies needed in an operative procedure.
• Demonstrate an ability to perform all duties required of a Surgical Technologist in accordance with established procedures and completion of skills check list.
• Exhibit flexibility and adaptability to changes in room or duty assignments.

Work Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Education: Completion of Health First’s On-The-Job Training Program for Surgical Technician, OR graduate of a program for Surgical Technologist (Military, Community College, or School for Surgical Technology), OR one year of work experience as a surgical tech or surgical assistant.
• Licensure: None
• Certification: American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Skills (BLS) Healthcare Provider Completion prior to start date and maintain in active status.
• Work Experience: None
• Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Read, write, speak, and understand English.
• Perform basic math o Reliable transportation with ability to respond from location within 30 minutes of assigned facility when on call.
• Flexible and adaptable with daily schedule and assigned tasks.
• Respond appropriately to stressful or life-threatening situations.
• Detail-oriented with ability for continuous concentration on an activity.
• Excellent customer service skills with ability to interact effectively with medical staff and patient care teams.
• Motivated to complete milestones and competencies with ability to receive constructive criticism and apply to future performance.
• Work autonomously, while consulting chain of command as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification: Certification as a Surgical Technologist
• Work Experience: One year of experience as a surgical technologist or surgical assistant

Physical Requirements

• Physically agile; may require walking, standing running, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing or crouching frequently.
• Medium work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, with or without assistance.
• May require moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces, including reaching out and above shoulders or over head.
• May lift, turn, pull, push, or ambulate people and/or equipment with or without assistance up to 90% of the assigned shift.
• May be exposed to inside and outside environments with varied temperatures, air quality, lighting and/or low to loud noise.
• May require working with biohazards such as blood/body fluids and airborne particles following OSHA and CDC Guidelines.
• Communicating with others to exchange information.
• Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform tasks.
• Workspace may vary from open to confined.
• May require travel to various facilities within and beyond county perimeter; may require use of personal vehicle.
