Job summary

Qualifications

  • Must be a Christian with an authentic, mature relationship with Jesus Christ and align with the HCS Statement of Faith and Employee Covenant.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self‑control, perseverance, and punctuality.
  • Prior coaching or playing experience is preferred; prior managerial experience is a plus.

  • Monitor and enforce compliance with HCS rules and regulations.
  • Instruct student‑athletes in fundamental skills, strategy and physical training for team success.
  • Teach athletes sound, safe techniques for the designated sport.
  • Uphold team expectations and provide accountability to student‑athletes.
  • Promote collaboration with students, parents, and staff to balance academics and athletics.

POSITION OBJECTIVE: The coach interacts directly with student‑athletes, coaches, parents and as a representative of HCS Athletics to be a highly visible platform for the exhibition of Christian character. The employee is to live and coach in such a way so that student‑athletes are led to righteousness in every area of life, and in particular their athletic development. The head coach is committed to fostering an environment of encouragement, teamwork, and excellence; not criticism, individualism, or perfectionism. It is the desire of our teams to play to win, but more importantly to glorify God.

QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS: The employee must be a Christian with an authentic and a mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ, who agrees to the HCS Statement of Faith, Charter of Core Values and Employee Covenant in both their professional conduct and personal lifestyle. The employee is committed to incorporating these qualities and standards in carrying out the calling to Christian education. In addition, demonstrate the character qualities of enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self‑control, perseverance and punctuality. Meet the stress of athletic competition with emotional stability and positive words/actions. The employee will establish and maintain excellent working relationships, representing Christ and HCS professionally and positively with the HCS community‑at‑large, including faculty and staff, Board members, parents, volunteers and others is crucial to the success of this role.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Prior coaching or playing experience is preferred. Previous managerial experience is a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coaches shall work with Varsity coaches in their sport in such areas as fundamentals, drills, patterns, offenses, defenses, conditioning, and coaching techniques.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with HCS rules and regulations.
  • Instruct student‑athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success based on the Heritage Christian Athletic Handbook.
  • Teach athletes to perform sound, safe fundamental techniques of the designated sport.
  • Coaches will be responsible for upholding team expectations and providing accountability to the student‑athletes.
  • Promote and encourage the success of all other programs, emphasizing the need to share multi‑sport athletes and to collaborate fruitfully with students, parents, and staff to balance our students’ investment in academics.
  • Provide supervision of the gym/field/locker room, etc at all times when athletes are present. Secure facilities when done.
  • Will coach from a Biblical perspective and strive to be a true reflection of Jesus Christ to our athletes.
  • Set an example of the importance of church attendance, prayer and Bible study.
  • Coach will create a winning environment by displaying a positive attitude and providing daily encouragement to those under their leadership, helping to build strong relationship.
  • Follow the Matthew 18 principle in dealing with students, parents, administration, and staff.
  • Support the Administration in carrying out the mission of the school.
  • Recognition that parents are primarily responsible before God for their child and partner with them.
  • Encourage students to accept God’s gift of salvation and grow in their faith.
  • Emphasize to students the reality of their own self‑worth in Christ.
  • Promote honesty, integrity, humility, loyalty, unity and encourage total character development of our athletes.
  • Additional duties, responsibility and activities are outlined in the Coaches Handbook and may be added to as needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position. Must be able to traverse campus and sports fields and facilities. Must be able to use a computer and other audio‑visual equipment. Must be able to ascend and descend stairs. Must be able to communicate with others. Specific vision abilities required in this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to hear low‑volume sounds. Must be able to assist children for health and safety reasons.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Indoors, outdoors, changes in temperature/humidity; potential for excessive noise, exposure to the elements is to be expected while assisting with outdoor field and court preparation and oversight of Athletic events and management responsibilities. The role involves both office work and on‑site presence at athletic events, training sessions, and program activities.
