Magnetic resonance imaging technologists, also referred to as MRI technologists, utilize magnetic resonance imaging scanners to capture specific images ordered by a physician to aid in patient diagnosis. MRI technologists must be able to closely follow a physician's instructions, prepare and operate MRI equipment, position patients correctly, and effectively record the requested diagnostic images.

A caregiver in this position works nights, 6:30PM - 7:00AM.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

1. Perform MRI scans as prescribed by physicians.
2. Interview patients to obtain needed information and provide education to the patient about their scan.
3. Maintain constant patient contact during scan and respond accordingly to patient reactions such as claustrophobic reactions.
4. Provide MRI information to patients, families, physicians and other appropriate people.
5. Assist in developing new techniques and procedures relating to MRI.
6. Schedule procedures to ensure proper time allotment.
7. Conduct facility tours and demonstrate equipment for visitors.
8. Remain abreast of current developments by attending related seminars and reviewing current literature.
9. Assist in other areas of Radiology, if needed, if there is no other work in the MRI section.
10. Comply with all Radiology Information System entry (including PACS) requirements for accurate patient, film, supply, tracking monitors.
11. Ensure the safety of everyone in the MRI area through limited access, screening, and proper bloodborne pathogen precautions.
12. Inject contrast material by intravenous puncture or established intravenous.
13. Assist and support the Radiologic student program, specifically the clinical aspect.
14. Provide supervision and feedback to students as they perform procedures.
15. Review images with students on request and provide quarterly evaluations of students to clinical instructors for formal reviews.
16. Complete mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department-specific competencies and requirements.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

1. Graduate of an accredited school of Radiologic Technology or graduate of an accredited institution per the primary pathway of the ARRT.
2. Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technology.
3. Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in magnetic resonance imaging within 24 months of appointment.
4. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).
5. Current knowledge of magnetic resonance imaging techniques and parameters.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

1. Three years of experience as a Radiologic Technologist.
2. One year of experience in computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging.

Physical Requirements:

1. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
2. Must be able to lift or assist with lifting patients of varying weight and manipulate equipment daily.
3. Requires frequent pushing and pulling of equipment up to 75 pounds.
