Job summary

Boston Medical Center is seeking an MRI Technologist to operate MRI scanners responsibly under supervision while providing technical support to the radiology department. The successful candidate will ensure patient comfort, perform necessary imaging procedures, and maintain high-quality standards in patient care.

A graduate of an approved MRI school is required along with ARRT registration in Radiologic Technology. Competitive compensation ranges from $48.90 to $62.03 per hour. Additional benefits include a comprehensive compensation package and support for employee wellbeing.

Job description

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the MRI/CT Supervisor, and following established policies and procedures, operates a magnetic resonance scanner to obtain images for use by physicians in diagnoses and treatment of pathologies. The technologist provides technical and ancillary support to the department mission through demonstrated clinical and academic competency in MRI. Clinical and academic competency is defined as completing training and meeting all clinical responsibilities to all areas assigned, ability to work unsupervised in the clinical setting, willingness to rotate to all areas as the need arises, and holding appropriate registration and advanced certification, as required by the ARRT, and the ACR. Primary duties are to work as a technologist on the Newton Pavilion, Menino Pavilion, or Yawkey ACC, or any future Boston Medical Center MRI locations, while also implementing policy and procedures as determined necessary.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties
  • Operate a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to perform technologist duties as required and necessary for proper departmental work flow.
  • Prepare patient for exams as required and ensure patient comfort and modesty at all times.
  • Accommodate patient needs and staffing needs through flexibility in scheduling and timeliness of studies.
  • Perform appropriate studies as determined through policy and procedure, following requisitions and ensuring exams requested match patient condition and/or history. Call or consult proper persons for more information as necessary.
  • Set up equipment as necessary and use proper imaging techniques, adjusting imaging factors when necessary to improve study or quality factors.
  • Work through radiologist's requirements to provide appropriate images and provide additional views and variations of techniques as requested.
  • Complete procedures in a timely fashion while providing quality images for Radiology and outside departments, completing work by the end of the shift or communicating with coworkers when work needs completion.
  • Participate in intravenous (IV) training, and pass all competencies required to start and administer IV contrast material under the general observation of a qualified physician.
  • Maintain equipment through interaction with management and department service vendors to maximize equipment uptime, patient care, and minimize dollar impact to the hospital.
  • Provide patient‑focused customer service, ensuring patient complaints are communicated professionally, keeping discussions around patients to a minimum, and ensuring no inappropriate behavior.
  • Handle telephone calls and requests for services professionally and appropriately.
  • Monitor patient conditions and, if assistance may be required, facilitate best care by involving nursing, further monitoring, and other patient‑focused solutions.
  • Ensure all required documentation is completed for billing purposes, including electronic orders and paperwork related to all procedures performed, and understand and adhere to managed care guidelines.
  • Work hours as regularly scheduled or according to the operational needs of the radiology department, following all departmental established and appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Utilize hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the department and hospital's mission, treating patients and fellow staff with dignity and respect and reporting any problems to the supervisor.
  • Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

Job Requirements
  • Education: Must be a graduate of an approved school that fulfills the ARRT requirements for primary or secondary pathway education in MRI.
  • Certifications, Licensures & Registrations: Must be ARRT registered in Radiologic Technology. MRI specialty required or obtained within one year of employment.
  • BLS required.
  • Experience: Experience in MRI preferred. MRI specific classroom experience a plus.
  • Compensation Range: $48.90 – $62.03 per hour. Base pay includes education, experience, licensure/certifications directly related to position requirements and comprehensive total compensation such as benefits (medical, dental, vision, pharmacy), 403(b) savings matches, earned time cash out, paid time off, career advancement opportunities, and resources to support employee and family wellbeing.
