Job summary

VCU Health is seeking an MRI Technologist to perform MRI procedures, ensure patient safety, and coordinate post-processing for physician review. The role requires ARRT NMTCB or ARMRIT certification within 90 days and BLS certification.

You will work a Monday–Friday day shift and participate in contrast administration and patient education. Responsibilities include safety protocol adherence, timely order closure, and collaboration with radiology teams to deliver high-quality imaging studies

Qualifications

  • Certified by ARRT NMTCB or ARMRIT within first 90 days of hire.
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers required.
  • Experience with routine and complex MRI studies.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and contrast administration.

Responsibilities

  • Perform MRI procedures utilizing MRI scanners to produce cross-sectional and 3D images.
  • Assess patient risk for allergic reactions to contrast media and other medications before administration.
  • Evaluate lab values prior to administering contrast media or proceeding with examinations.
  • Explain procedures to patients and families using age-appropriate language.
  • Adhere to imaging protocols and safety standards; document deviations or patient-specific issues.
  • Notify health care providers when urgent clinical concerns arise.
  • Complete post-processing, image display, and transfer for physician review in a timely manner.
  • Ensure timely order closure and accurate charge entry.

Shift: Monday - Friday 7:00AM - 3:30PM. Call required once training completed.

The practice of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is performed by radiologic technologists responsible for the use of radio frequencies (RF’s) within a magnetic field on humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes. An MRI technologist performs MRI procedures utilizing MRI scanners and power injectors producing cross-sectional and 3D images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner.

Core Competencies

Perform all the duties of an MRI Technologist I.

Capable of safely administering contrast or other imaging agents including the identification of incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Expected to assess a patient’s risk for allergic reaction to contrast media and other related medications prior to administration and following appropriate protocols for escalation of concerns.

Expected to evaluate lab values prior to administering contrast media or other related medications and beginning the ordered examination.

Capable of providing accurate explanations and instructions to the patient and family using age-appropriate language and verifying that the patient understands and agrees to the completion of the ordered exam.

Capable of performing ordered exams or therapy in accordance with established imaging protocols while respecting the patient’s ability and comfort.

Capable of adhering to policies and utilizing protocols to determine that expected outcomes have been met.

Capable of documenting deviations from protocol and/or patient-specific issues that may impact image quality.

Capable of notifying the appropriate health care provider when an immediate clinical response is necessary based on procedural findings, patient condition, or other relevant concerns that may impact patient safety or care.

Expected to timely complete all required post-processing, image display, and transfer for physician review.

Expected demonstrates timely order closure, charge entry, and PACS QA completion.

Expected to routinely cover open shifts as appropriate based on your level of competency.

Experienced and competent in routine and complex studies.

Complete understanding of technical standards, scope of practice, department and health system policies, and safety and service standards.

Complete understanding of imaging equipment, image processing software, instrumentation, and ancillary patient care equipment.

Education, Certification & Experience

The position requires Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) or Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) or American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) within the first 90 days of hire.
