Overview

Cumberland Medical Center is a part of Covenant Health, the largest nonprofit health system in East Tennessee. This acute care hospital in Crossville, Tennessee, is fully accredited by the Joint Commission. It provides comprehensive care across cardiology, orthopedics, maternity, cancer treatment, wound care, emergency and critical care, surgical suites, imaging, cardiac rehab, sleep disorder care, and hyperbaric medicine. The hospital offers private patient rooms in a family‑oriented environment focused on exceptional patient care.

Position Summary

Perform complex tasks associated with the operation of high‑field‑strength magnets and related equipment to produce high‑quality MRI images. The MRI technologist is responsible for maintaining a safe MRI environment at all times.

Responsibilities
  • Perform procedures or examinations under the order of a licensed medical practitioner for diagnostic interpretation or therapeutic intervention.
  • Operate the magnetic resonance system, surface coils, physiologic gating devices and other equipment to achieve desired results; select appropriate pulse sequences; evaluate MRI scans for technical quality; post‑process; complete MRI exam in the electronic medical record and send to PACS; maintain the four MRI safety zones per ACR guidelines; obtain high‑quality scans in a timely manner; assist radiologist in developing new protocols and imaging techniques.
  • Identify and screen patients and others according to MRI safety guidelines; obtain patient history; complete and verify accurate consents; provide patient instructions and education; monitor patients during exams; position patients using immobilization and protective equipment; apply safety principles to minimize risk; provide psychosocial care; practice aseptic technique and universal precautions; apply infection prevention techniques.
  • Identify, prepare, and/or administer medications as prescribed by a licensed independent practitioner; perform venipuncture or IM injection for contrast media; load and operate pressure/power injector; administer oral or rectal contrast as needed; perform lab draws as applicable.
  • Assist radiologist with MRI procedures such as biopsies; ensure time‑outs are performed.
  • Coordinate scheduling and patient flow; demonstrate clerical proficiency; assist with inventory control.
  • Educate, train, orient, and assist new staff members; provide education for student technologists.
  • Maintain current Basic Life Support certification and perform BLS as needed.
  • Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards; complete required educational assignments annually; work toward achieving goals and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Education: None specified; however, education must be sufficient to meet the standards for the licenses and certifications required by the issuing authority.

Minimum Experience: Must have successfully completed an educational program accredited by a mechanism acceptable to the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) or the ARMRIT (American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists).

Licensure Requirement: Must have and maintain one of the following:

  • Path 1: ARRT (R) and within 1 year ARRT (MR)
  • Path 2: NMTCB (N) or equivalency ARRT (N) and within 1 year ARRT (MR)
  • Path 3: ARDMS and within 1 year ARRT (MR)
  • Path 4: ARMRIT certification
