ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Clean, inspect, and lubricate recyclable sorting equipment, and perform routine maintenance or minor repairs on recycling machinery.
  • Maintain a tidy facility by sweeping and using shovels as needed.
  • Respond to calls for emergency repairs, showcasing your agility and problem-solving skills.
  • Keep accurate records of activity and supplies used, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  • Execute preventive maintenance checks according to schedule, contributing to the longevity of equipment.
  • Assist journey-level mechanics in the installation, maintenance, and repair of recycling mechanical equipment and systems, demonstrating your teamwork and collaboration.

All other duties as assigned.

  • High school diploma or equivalent, with educational documentation required upon offer of employment.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions effectively.
  • Preferred two years of progressively responsible experience working as a mechanic's helper or in a similar role.
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and during weather events as per departmental policies.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver's license, with successful completion of a three-year motor vehicle check required for selected candidates.
  • Employment offers contingent upon passing background, motor vehicle, and reference checks, drug screening, and post-job offer physicals.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and moving up to 100 pounds, climbing stairs and catwalks, and working on equipment.
  • Adherence to safety rules and regulations in potentially loud and hazardous working conditions, such as around moving mechanical parts, vibrations, heights, and airborne particles.
Materials and Equipment Used:
  • Various hand and power tools, brooms, shovels, pitchforks, power sanders, grinders, drills, light trucks, or other motor vehicles.
Knowledge of:
  • Machines and tools, their designs, uses, safety, and maintenance.
  • Rotating equipment such as speed reducers, conveyors, pumps, gear boxes, and gear drives.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Skills in:
  • Active listening, monitoring performance, and assessing improvements.
  • Operating and maintaining hand and power tools.
  • Performing general maintenance, labor activities, and repair tasks.
Ability to:
  • Grasp, manipulate, and assemble objects swiftly and accurately.
  • Adjust machine controls precisely and repeatedly.
  • Maintain steady hand and arm movements.
  • Coordinate movements effectively.
  • Follow oral and written instructions with precision.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations and operate a motor vehicle safely.
