Job summary

McWane Plant & Industrial is seeking an experienced Machine Operator for our Job Shop Fabrication and Machining operation. You will measure, thread, face flanges, and prepare pipe sections using lathes and threaders to support fabrication projects.

The role requires reading tape measures and micrometers, operating manual machines, and maintaining safe, accurate production outputs across 3" to 6" pipe diameters.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent desired.
  • Previous experience with machinery is desired.
  • Ability to read a tape measure and micrometer.

Job Description

McWane Plant and Industrial (MPI) is seeking an experienced Machine Operator to join our Job Shop Fabrication and Machining operation. The Machine Operator is responsible for measuring, threading, adjusting flange fit, and facing the flange on a piece of ductile or steel pipe. The position requires operating all types of manual machine tools such as lathes and threaders, and using the machines and crane to move pipe in and out of machining centers.

Scope of Responsibilities
  • Ensuring personal safety and the safety of team members.
  • Assisting supervisors and managers in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Wearing appropriate PPE, which may include fall protection, respiratory protection, hearing protection, foot, hand, head, and eye protection.
  • Maintaining cleanliness of the assigned work area and a safe, clean work environment.
  • Proactively promoting the McWane Way principles.
  • Following all processes and procedures associated with the Clear Water Safety Management Program and advising management of any deviations.
  • Identifying fabrication requirements for each piece of pipe.
  • Placing, centering, and tightening pipe for work; machining tapered threads into the pipe and verifying measurements such as thread depth and correct taper.
  • Testing the flange to ensure proper screwing onto the pipe.
  • Applying glue to the pipe and flange and using the machine to tighten the flange onto the pipe.
  • For threaders, removing pipe from machine and moving to the next processing operation.
  • For lathes, running the cutting tool across the surface of the flange face to flush fit the flange onto the pipe.
  • Working primarily with pipe and flanges from 3" to 6" in diameter and lengths from 4 inches to 18 feet long.
  • Proficient in quality standards and able to meet prescribed production output objectives for the work center.
  • Good with mathematics, able to read a tape measure and micrometer.
  • Understanding machinery processes.
  • Consistent attendance, able to arrive on time every day.
  • Team player, willing to work when needed, help and volunteer across a variety of machines.
  • Positive, enthusiastic, and helpful attitude.
Work Environment
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Required to communicate verbally and in written English.
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • Must meet physical requirements and wear appropriate PPE (steel-toed boots, safety glasses, hearing protection).
  • Must work in dust and fumes.
  • Will be required to work overtime and extended hours depending on customer and company demands.
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions and tolerate loud noises.
  • Has knowledge of industrial tools, uses, and maintenance.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus and distinguish color.
  • Must be able to operate a forklift and obtain certification.
