For over 20 years Voluntary Action Center has been dedicated to promoting dignity, health, and self-sufficiency by providing high quality nutrition services to individuals with disabilities and seniors within our LaSalle County communities.

We are currently looking for a part-time driver and kitchen assistant to support our Streator Illinois location who works M-F 6:30am to noon. Reporting to our Meals on Wheels Manager, you will be assigned a route to deliver meals to home-bound individuals and will provide kitchen support by assisting in the preparation of food for our nutrition program. The ideal candidate is well spoken, cooperative, dependable, service oriented along with a compassionate, friendly, energetic attitude. This position may be occasionally be required to work variable hours that may include off-peak times, evening and weekends if needed.

Drivers are required to check to see if the client is okay and is mandated to immediately report any unusual circumstances and as a Kitchen Assistant you will be responsible for providing safe and nutritious meals, obeying all applicable food preparation regulations and exercising diligent care in all activities relative to agency nutrition programs. This position must represent Voluntary Action Center’s mission and values at all times.

EXAMPLES OF MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Loads prepared meals and equipment into vehicle according to established procedures
  • Delivers meals to client’s homes according to predetermined route structure
  • Collects and returns equipment to a central location(s)
  • Notify appropriate staff of any problems or client needs
  • Notify appropriate staff in advance if unable to deliver on an assigned day
  • Advises supervisor of client delivery records, noting any location and schedule changes observed during delivery and serving, if appropriate
  • A mandatory report for elder abuse and/or neglect under the Illinois Adult Protective Services Act.
  • Under the general instruction of the Meals Program Manager, performs general kitchen duties in the preparation and clean-up of meals.
  • Assists with meal preparation as directed.
  • Assist with special events as needed.
  • Operates and cleans a variety of specialized food service equipment, i.e. dishwasher, commercial ovens and mixer, meat slicer and steam tables, etc.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state and local health and safety regulations at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Illinois Food Sanitation License preferred. Must obtain within 90 days or hire.
  • Must be dependable, meet deadlines, and adaptable to working with the clients’ needs.
  • Mandatory reporting experience preferred.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check and physical exam.
  • Valid driver license with a clean driving record required.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to handle sensitive confidential matters with discretion.
  • Ability to work variable hours such as evenings and weekends if needed.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of and ability to navigate Streator and surrounding LaSalle County areas.
  • Working knowledge of tablets and GPS navigation.
  • Knowledge of safety and sanitation precautions common to the food industry.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Ability to follow policies, regulations, best practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to work closely and cooperatively with fellow employees and build positive relationships.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical activity of position requires the ability to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, walk, push, pull, lift, and grasp. Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 10-30 pounds of force constantly to move objects, frequently from floor level to waist level, less frequently from floor level to overhead level. Visual acuity for depth and field of vision. Repetitive motions of the wrists, hands and/or fingers required. Must meet the medical requirements of a physical exam. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is on his/her feet and requires physical mobility and stamina to participate in activities which may be strenuous. The noise level varies but is generally moderate to loud. Must meet the medical requirements of a physical exam process.
