Summary

This position is in Veterans Transportation Service (VTS) under Medical Administration Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) - Veterans Health Administration (VHA) - VA Medical Center - in Marion - IL (1) as well as Evansville - IN (1) and supported catchment area. The primary purpose of this position is to provide various passengers transportation to and from VA Medical Center facilities - private healthcare facilities - and other locations.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the WG-6 level - you must meet the following: SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - A Selective Placement Factor (SPF) has been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration. The SPF for this position is: DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Requires a current valid Class A - B - or C Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (Note: We may not accept pictures. Please Do Not submit a copy of your license. This requirement will be verified if interviewed.) ~AND~ SCREEN OUT: Ability to do the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision. Experience required for this position includes operating/driving diesel - gas - or alternative fuel powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 10 -000 to 32 -000 Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and a hydraulic lift gate; operating in various road conditions performing pre- and post-trip vehicle maintenance checks; and vehicles are of multiple types and gross vehicle weights and reading/understanding road maps and road/traffic laws and driving interstate highways - two-lane roads - maneuvering vehicle in and around congested loading dock areas - and in dark/nighttime conditions; safely transport patients to their destinations; loading and securing wheelchair patients in the vehicle; loading and unloading cargo; (Resume(s) must clearly support responses to this online questionnaire to receive credit.) ~AND~ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work requires reaching - turning - or moving hands - arms - feet - and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Incumbent will be required to assist patients with a variety of medical conditions and/or disabilities. Associated duties require stooping - bending - lifting - climbing - and securing patients - oxygen - and wheelchairs with appropriate securing devices. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier. Must follow prescribed safety procedures using appropriate lifting methods and body mechanics for heavy lifting or moving heavy objects. Must be able to drive for a minimum of a four-hour period and stay mentally alert. If driver realizes they are not mentally alert - they must use good judgment in pulling over at the first safe area - road-checking vehicle with walk-around inspection - and continue driving as soon as possible. WORKING CONDITIONS: Drivers work mostly outside and operate vehicles in all kinds of weather. Drivers are exposed to dirt - fumes - and to the possibility of cuts - bruises - and broken bones as a result of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle. Must have the ability to drive in rural areas - very congested Metropolitan traffic and/or construction zones. Must safely handle patients - both stretcher and wheelchair - in loading and unloading from vans and buses. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. Duties
  • Major duties and responsibilities will include: Receiving work assignments and direction regarding work methods - procedures and schedules from either the Transportation Coordinator and/or the Mobility Manager
  • Incumbent is responsible to ensure that only eligible Veterans and their caregivers are transported to the Medical Center and CBOCs and returned to their respective pick-up locations
  • Serving as a patient transportation driver shuttling patients to and from approved locations up to 150-mile radius
  • Provides non-emergent - safe transportation of eligible Veterans and cargo
  • Arriving at and departing from pickup and discharge points at scheduled times
  • Reading installation maps and judging road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route
  • Enforcing passenger safety and seatbelt use
  • Using multiple variations of Mobile Data Computer (MDC) in and out of the vehicles for assigned trips and duties daily
  • Loading and unloading patients and medical supplies
  • Inspecting - cleaning - and preventive maintenance on vehicles and will require completing routine reporting requirements for the WS Program
  • Operates and provides preventive maintenance for VTS patient transport vehicles
  • Maintaining records and document actions - such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports
  • Marion - IL VAMC and/or Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) via the VTS shuttle
  • Using two-way radios (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations
  • Incumbent is responsible for providing the travel office with a list of Veterans who arrived at the Incumbent interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day
