Job description

Description :

Title: Motor Equipment Operator III/ Laborer – CDL
Department: Public Works- Cemetery
Status: 40 hours non-exempt - 7:00am - 3:30pm
Salary: Grade PW5, FY25 range $25.99– $32.82/hour

Duties: The purpose of this position is to perform skilled manual work of a difficult and responsible nature in the operation of public works equipment of substantial weight and complexity. Works under the general direction of the Cemetery Foreman, receiving specific instructions regarding duties and areas of assigned responsibility.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides assistance with cemetery maintenance and interments by performing manual labor, and operating division equipment including: backhoe, front end loader, compactor, mowers, trimmers, jackhammers, trucks, snow plows/blowers and roadway de-icing vehicles.
  • Performs labor incidental to the work of operating equipment or other laboring tasks.
  • Assures that work is performed correctly and efficiently; and that proper safety precautions are followed.
  • Participates in all cemetery construction, landscaping, and maintenance projects such as:
    • Excavating for interments or dis-interments
    • Lowering or removing the deceased
    • Installation of grave liners
    • Landscaping duties include but are not limited to: seed, loam, fertilize, rake, roll, weed, mow and water lawn areas; plant, trim, prune and spray trees, hedges, shrubbery and flowers
    • Rake and dispose of rubbish and leaves.
    • Collection and disposal of trash receptacle waste and other maintenance, care and upkeep as required.
    • Installation of street signs; painting; repairing and replacement of turf.
    • Operates vehicles providing roadway snow removal and de-icing within the cemetery and on town roadways.
    • Assists other DPW divisions as necessary. May operate vehicles and equipment in lower classifications as needed or assigned to complete division or departmental projects or workload.
    • Performs similar or related work as required.

Requirements:

  • High school graduation; three years of public works construction and maintenance experience including heavy equipment motor vehicle; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather, dirt and other disagreeable factors.
  • Possession of a valid Class-B CDL, possession of a valid Hoisting Engineer’s license.
  • Participation in the Town’s mandated drug and alcohol random testing program.
  • Work requires careful operation of assigned equipment pursuant to prescribed procedures in order to avoid breakdowns or to avoid damage to public or private property. Intermittent execution of independent judgment is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
