Job summary

Strativ Group in Los Angeles, CA, is seeking a Motor Controls & Power Electronics Engineer to architect the electric-drive system for a new spacecraft platform. The role covers motor, power electronics, sensors, controls, and hardware integration.

You will model with MATLAB/Simulink, design motor-control and inverters, validate via HIL/SIL, and work with cross-functional engineering teams to move from simulation to flight-ready hardware.

Qualifications

  • Seven or more years of motor-controls, electric-powertrain or power-electronics experience.
  • Experience with BLDC or PMSM motors and advanced control methods such as field-oriented control.
  • Knowledge of motor inverters, power conversion and complex electric-drive systems.
  • Experience taking a control design from simulation into real-time DSP, FPGA or embedded hardware.
  • Understanding of HIL/SIL, prototype testing and physical system validation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop dynamic models of electromechanical and power systems using MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Design and optimise motor-control, inverter and power-conversion architectures.
  • Model interactions between motor, supply, sensors, controls and mechanical system.
  • Translate designs into real-time controls on DSP/FPGA or embedded hardware.
  • Develop HIL and SIL simulations to test system behaviour before flight integration.

Job description

Motor Controls & Power Electronics Engineer

LA, California | Fully Onsite | $180,000–$210,000 + Equity

Most motor-control roles ask you to improve an established product. This opportunity gives you the chance to help develop an entirely new spacecraft system and take it from advanced modelling through to real, flight-intent hardware.

I am partnering with an ambitious space technology company developing a novel platform capable of deploying multiple payloads in orbit

They are now looking for an experienced engineer to architect and model the electric-drive system behind this technology, bringing together the motor, power electronics, electrical supply, sensors, controls and mechanical load.

You will join at a key stage of development. The initial system architecture and design foundation are already in place, and the team is now moving from commercially available components towards a fully customised solution.

What you’ll be doing

  • Develop dynamic models of complex electromechanical and power systems using MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Design and optimise motor-control, inverter and power-conversion architectures.
  • Model how the motor, electrical supply, sensors, controls and mechanical system interact.
  • Translate theoretical designs into real-time controls implemented on DSP, FPGA or comparable hardware.
  • Develop HIL and SIL simulations to test system behaviour before full physical integration.
  • Work closely with electrical, mechanical, software and systems engineers.
  • Support prototype integration, testing, troubleshooting and preparation for flight.
  • Contribute to technical decisions around system sizing, performance, cost, risk and buy-versus-build strategy.

What we’re looking for

  • Seven or more years of relevant motor-controls, electric-powertrain or power-electronics experience.
  • An engineering degree or closely related technical qualification.
  • Strong system-level thinking—the ability to understand how every part of a complex electric system affects the others.

Experience within electric vehicles, eVTOL, electric aviation, aerospace, defence, UAVs, propulsion or high-performance motion control would translate particularly well. Direct space experience is valuable but not essential.

This is primarily a design, architecture and modelling role, but the successful engineer must understand implementation and be comfortable working closely with the hardware used to bring the design to life.

Why consider it?

You will have meaningful technical ownership over first-of-its-kind space technology, working across modelling, controls, electronics and physical hardware. Rather than maintaining a mature system, you will help shape a custom architecture with a clear route towards flight. It is a rare opportunity to apply advanced electric-powertrain expertise to a genuinely new space application.

Additional package: Equity, performance-related bonus, comprehensive medical coverage and competitive PTO

Candidates must satisfy applicable U.S. export-control requirements. The official position covers custom motor controllers, power-conversion systems, MATLAB modelling, DSP/FPGA implementation, HIL/SIL development and preparation of prototype technology for flight.
