Job summary

River Bank & Trust is seeking an experienced Mortgage Underwriter to assess residential loans (Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, Jumbo) for secondary market sale. You will ensure files meet agency, investor, and regulatory standards, validate AUS findings, and coordinate with Processing, Secondary, and Closing teams to resolve issues.

Minimum five years of underwriting experience is required, with DE/SAR/LAPP certifications preferred.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years mortgage underwriting experience across Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, and Jumbo loans.
  • Experience with investor guidelines and secondary market requirements.
  • Knowledge of TRID, RESPA, ECOA and related regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze residential mortgage loan files for accuracy and compliance with investor and agency guidelines.
  • Underwrite and issue decisions (Approve, Suspend, or Deny) for various loan types.
  • Validate AUS findings and apply conditions to ensure salability.
  • Maintain knowledge of investor overlays and jumbo investor requirements.
  • Collaborate with Processing, Secondary, and Closing teams to resolve underwriting issues.
  • Provide clear communication to loan originators and staff about conditions and documentation needs.

Position Summary

River Mortgage Services is seeking an experienced Mortgage Underwriter with a deep understanding of residential mortgage underwriting, investor guidelines, and compliance requirements. This position is responsible for underwriting Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, and Jumbo mortgage loans for secondary market sale, ensuring each file meets agency, investor, and regulatory standards.

  • - Review and analyze residential mortgage loan files for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with investor, agency, and internal guidelines.
  • - Underwrite and issue decisions (Approve, Suspend, or Deny) for Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, and Jumbo loans.
  • - Validate AUS findings (DU/LP/GUS) and apply appropriate conditions to ensure salability.
  • - Maintain strong working knowledge of investor overlays, Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac guidelines, agency updates, and jumbo investor requirements.
  • - Partner with Processing, Secondary, and Closing teams to resolve underwriting issues efficiently.
  • - Ensure all files meet compliance requirements related to TRID, RESPA, ECOA, and other applicable regulations.
  • - Assist in maintaining investor eligibility and quality standards by adhering to secondary market best practices.
  • - Participate in ongoing training and contribute to continuous improvement of underwriting policies and procedures.
  • - Provide clear, consistent communication to loan originators and internal staff regarding conditions, exceptions, and documentation needs.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
  • - High School diploma or equivalent
  • - At least 5 years of mortgage underwriting experience (including Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, and Jumbo loans)
  • - DE, SAR, or LAPP certifications preferred, but not required
Skills, Abilities & Expectations
  • - Strong working knowledge of Encompass LOS and automated underwriting systems (DU/LP/GUS)
  • - In-Depth understanding of agency, investor, and jumbo program guidelines and secondary market requirements.
  • - Familiarity with appraisal review, income analysis, and collateral evaluation.
  • - Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • - Detail oriented and organized
  • - Ability to analyze financial information

Physical Demands

The employee will occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee will regularly sit; talk; hear; and use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee will occasionally stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Special vision requirements include close, distant, and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
