Job Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Mortgage Underwriter to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for evaluating and assessing mortgage loan applications to determine eligibility based on established guidelines. This role requires a strong understanding of financial concepts, credit analysis, and underwriting standards to ensure sound lending decisions that align with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Review and underwrite residential mortgage loans with accuracy and efficiency, ensuring compliance with company, investor, and regulatory guidelines.
• Analyze borrower qualifications including LTV, DTI, credit history, income, and assets to assess risk and identify red flags or potential fraud.
• Approve or deny loans within delegated authority and established turn times, communicating clearly with internal teams while upholding fair lending practices.
• Evaluate appraisals to ensure adherence to investor and secondary market requirements.
• Collaborate with Loan Officers and Processors to collect missing documents or clarify inconsistencies.
• Recommend alternative loan programs or structuring options when a file doesn’t meet original guidelines.
• Stay current on industry trends, agency guidelines, and regulatory updates to ensure compliant decision-making.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in mortgage underwriting or related financial roles is preferred.
• Strong proficiency in Encompass LOS
• DE and/or SAR/LAPP certification required
• 5+ years of recent residential mortgage underwriting experience
• Experience with Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA loan products
• Familiarity with Jumbo, Homestyle, and 203k loans (preferred, not required)
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines
• High school diploma or equivalent (college degree preferred)
