Job summary

Boston Music Project in Boston, MA seeks a String Teaching Artist for Josiah Quincy Elementary to support an elementary school orchestra from 7:30 to 9:30 AM, five days a week during the school year. Responsibilities include team teaching, leading sectionals, and private instruction to foster musical growth and social-emotional development.

The role emphasizes collaboration with Ensemble Directors and a strong focus on inclusive teaching methods.

Qualifications

• Experience working with young string players (ages 5 to 14).
• Knowledge of string pedagogy, repertoire, technique.
• Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
• Passion for teaching and going above and beyond for all students.
• Ability to teach primary instrument and basic proficiency in other strings.
• Strong communication skills, in person and in writing.
• Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds briefly.

Responsibilities

• Team teach and support full-orchestra rehearsals of 20-30 students.
• Lead sectionals, small-group, and private lessons as planned by the Ensemble Directors and Program Manager; work with students on repertoire, sight-reading, ear-training, & string technique.
• Set weekly goals for sectional rehearsals and lessons with the Ensemble Director.
• Provide student progress and individual learning plans with mid-year/year-end evaluations, with support from the Site Coordinator.
• Attend staff meetings, team meetings, and professional development sessions (paid).
• Staff orientation/professional development meetings (paid).
• Support 3 student concerts per year (Dec, Mar, Jun).
• Teaching schedule follows Boston Public School year (Sept 2026–June 2027).
