Job description

Overview

Immediate Shifts: Monday - Friday 5:00am-9:00am and 9:00am-3:00pm, Saturday and Sunday 6:00am-12:00pm

Lifeguards starting rate: $16.00 hourly and $1 more hourly for opening shift between 5:00am-9:00am.

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the pool deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Maintains active surveillance of the pool area and remains on duty and in an alert state until properly relieved from duty.
  • Knows, reviews, implements, and discusses all safety rules, policies, and emergency procedures with all members and rentals. Responds to emergency or unsafe situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures, and completes related reports as required.
  • Arrives at your designated location at scheduled time, dressed appropriately in lifeguard attire (lifeguard shirt, bathing suit, easily removable footwear, water bottle, and sunscreen).
  • Completes mandatory staff training and attends all staff meetings (in-person & online). Attends monthly in-service training in accordance with YMCA standards and the state Health Department Code.
  • Checks pool, pool deck, and equipment for hazardous conditions upon arrival and departure, and maintains cleanliness. Ensures that all appropriate equipment and supplies are available as needed.
  • Performs chemical testing when not actively guarding and maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and the state Health Department code. Reports any discrepancies with chemical readings to the immediate supervisor.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 16+
  • Certifications: Current YMCA, American Red Cross, or equivalent accepted by the Bathing Code Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
