Job Overview

Under general supervision of the Pathologist or Pathology Assistant, assists in receipt, processing, and organization of surgical tissue specimens in the Gross Room, supporting the hospital's mission and goals.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field
Experience
  • Laboratory setting experience
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in surgical pathology procedures: accessioning, specimen preparation, fixation, and frozen sections
  • Handle specimen pickup, verification, and delivery within hospital
  • Process external laboratory specimens according to regulations
  • Maintain gross room operations: stocking, logging, equipment maintenance
  • Maintain chain-of-custody for medico-legal cases
  • Ensure equipment functionality and document quality assurance
  • Report issues to supervisors and participate in staff training
  • Preserve specimens for conferences, research, or teaching
  • Participate in educational activities and support department goals
Physical and Work Environment
  • Moderate physical exertion, manual dexterity, long standing
  • Potential exposure to fumes, chemicals, infectious materials
Skills and Abilities
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, basic computer skills
Additional Role Details

This position supports both Morgue Technician and Anatomic Pathology Technician duties, including autopsy support, specimen accessioning, and laboratory assistance, requiring adherence to SOPs and knowledge of medical terminology. The candidate will interact with various hospital and external personnel to coordinate specimen handling and legal processes.

Work Schedule and Environment

40 hours/week, day shift, non-exempt position at WVU Hospitals, Morgantown, WV.
