Job Title: WCC WGFD Habitat Technician
General Description:

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department, in cooperation with the Bighorn National Forest, is currently working on multiple large-scale, multi-watershed riparian and aspen enhancement projects for the benefit of wildlife habitat, forest diversity, and wildfire management. Aspen forests and riparian habitats are high-priority habitats for wildlife, as well as providing valuable fuel breaks and refugia in the event of wildfire. Due to recent initiation of multiple watershed restoration projects in the Powder River and Tongue Ranger Districts, an opportunity has arisen to develop various aspen and riparian enhancement projects. This position will be responsible for mapping aspen and willow habitat enhancement units and conducting pre- and post-habitat enhancement monitoring. The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to collaborate with land management specialists on developing post-fire watershed enhancement projects.

Essential Functions:
  • Utilize digital land cover resources, GIS data, and habitat enhancement data to develop projects focused on conifer removal and prescribed fire units aimed at habitat enhancement.
  • Use tablets, smartphones, and GPS units to map habitat enhancement units.
  • Evaluate habitat units in the field to determine suitable treatments, delineate boundaries, calculate acreage, and assess conifer encroachment for forestry thinning contracts.
  • Conduct detailed pre- and post-treatment habitat monitoring to evaluate treatment success, including assessing browse pressure on willow and aspen habitats, following established protocols.
  • Work independently or as part of a team with Wyoming Game and Fish and U.S. Forest Service personnel on habitat projects.
  • Compile and organize habitat mapping and monitoring data for future project development and assessment.
Physical Working Conditions:
  • The candidate may need to work alone in backcountry settings; outdoor survival skills and navigation are required.
  • Navigate independently using maps in remote locations; GPS units and smartphones will be used.
  • Hike extensive distances (3-10 miles per day) in diverse weather conditions and operate 4-wheel drive vehicles and ATVs safely on narrow mountain roads.
Minimum Qualifications:

Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.
