Job description

Job Title: Senior Monitoring & Observability Engineer

Location: Remote, CST time

Job Summary:Apex Systems is currently seeking a skilled Senior Monitoring & Observability Engineer to join one of our clients IT operations team. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining observability solutions across a hybrid infrastructure that includes SAS platforms, on-premises environments, and Linux databases. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in performance monitoring, data analytics, cross-platform system integration, and holistic engineering deliverables across different stages of the product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain observability frameworks for SAS applications, on-prem systems, and Linux databases.
  • Implement and manage monitoring tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, Dynatrace, or similar).
  • Monitor system health, performance metrics, and logs to proactively identify and resolve issues.
  • Collaborate with DBAs, SAS administrators, and infrastructure teams to ensure end-to-end visibility.
  • Create dashboards and alerts for real-time monitoring and incident response.
  • Analyze trends and anomalies in system performance and recommend improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with data governance and security policies across all platforms.
  • Document monitoring configurations, processes, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Achieve product commitments by using informal leadership and highly developed communication skills.
  • Use automation, system tools, open-source solutions, observability, and security first principles in daily work.
  • Contribute to team agile ceremonies, lead demos and presentations, and help new engineers learn established norms.
  • Initiate high-level solution design approaches and guide the team to achieve desired key software delivery capabilities using automated, coded enterprise, and observability.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in IT operations, observability, or monitoring roles.
  • Hands-on experience with SAS (Base, EG, Viya) in enterprise environments.
  • Strong knowledge of mainframe systems (e.g., IBM z/OS, DB2) and on-prem infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell).
  • Proficient working with Datadog, Autosys, and Moogsoft.
  • Familiarity with APM and log aggregation tools.
  • Experience with data visualization and dashboarding tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an AWS environment.
  • Experience working with ServiceNow or a similar platform.
  • Knowledge of ITIL or SRE practices.
  • Certifications in SAS, mainframe technologies, or observability platforms.
