Summary

Under the supervision of a RN, the Monitor Technician monitors, recognizes, and interprets cardiac rhythms, identifying deviations in patients' baseline and changes in SP02. The Technician notifies the RN of changes and initiates emergency responses for lethal arrhythmias, including irregular heart rhythms and cardiac arrest.

Responsibilities
  1. Attaches electrodes to patients to record electrical impulses for continuous ECG monitoring.
  2. Documents ECG tracings on telemetry monitors.
  3. Performs surveillance using complex cardiac monitoring systems, including rhythm screens and dysrhythmia detection systems.
  4. Identifies arrhythmias and signs of patient deterioration, intervening to ensure safety.
  5. Reports abnormalities to nursing staff or supervisors.
  6. Activates emergency responses for lethal arrhythmias or cardiac arrest.
  7. Corrects artifacts and maintains accurate patient monitoring records.

  • Electrocardiogram Competency (Required)

Additional Job Information

Requires critical thinking, effective communication, decisive judgment, and ability to work with minimal supervision. Knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and telemetry services is essential. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and handle interruptions. Minimum 6 months of experience post-externship or equivalent, with Monitor Technician certification and ECG interpretation coursework completed.
