Summary

Under the supervision of a RN, the Monitor Technician monitors, recognizes, and interprets cardiac rhythms while identifying deviations in patients' baseline, and changes in SP02. The Monitor Technician notifies the registered nurse of changes to a patient's status and initiates the appropriate emergency response by the critical care team in the event of a lethal arrhythmia, including irregular heart rhythms and cardiac arrest.

Responsibilities
  1. Identifies and corrects artifacts.
  2. Records information in patient's log and maintains accurate, neat account of patient's cardiac monitoring status during episodes of care.
  3. Identifies and records patient's rhythm and changes in patient rhythm and condition.
  4. Updates patient's records with all readings taken from the heart monitor or EKGs.
  5. Attaches electrodes to patients' bodies to record electrical impulses from the heart for continuous ECG Monitoring.
  6. Documents the electrocardiograph tracings of patients on telemetry monitors.
  7. Performs continual surveillance of complex cardiac monitoring systems, including ECG rhythm screens, computerized dysrhythmia detection systems, and rhythm printers.
  8. Identifies arrhythmias, deviations, signs of deterioration, and intervenes to ensure patient safety.
  9. Reports abnormal or changed telemetry monitoring to nursing staff or supervisor.
  10. Activates emergency response for lethal arrhythmia or cardiac arrest.

  • BLS American Heart E-Card (BLS AHA ECARD) - American Heart Association

Additional Job Information

Requires critical thinking, effective communication, decisive judgment, and minimal supervision. Knowledge of heart anatomy, physiology, and strip interpretation. Ability to work under stress, handle interruptions, and adapt to workload changes. Minimum of 6 months experience post-monitor technician extern program or equivalent experience. Certification in Monitor Technician and ECG interpretation required. New hires need at least 6 months experience or will be placed in extern role. Completion of ECG/EKG coursework required.
