Personal Finance/Money Staff Writer

Buy Side from WSJ is seeking an ambitious and energetic journalist for its Personal Finance (Money) team. We are looking for someone who can focus specifically on the personal finances of Americans who are navigating money-related conundrums as they graduate college, launch households, build community, deal with aging parents and emerge in their places of work.

The candidate must have experience writing articles on financial topics, have strong knowledge of personal finance and enjoy breaking down sometimes complicated topics in a way that is interesting, accurate, relevant and distinctive.

The successful candidate will have experience reporting on all or most of these topics: banking, home equity, investing, mortgages, retirement savings, taxes and budgeting.

About the Role:

This staff writer will ensure that articles meet high quality standards of journalism while responsibly guiding readers. Topics this writer will cover include banking, mortgages, personal loans, credit cards, investing, student loans, budgeting, insurance and taxes. This role is part of the Buy Side from WSJ editorial team.

This role can be fully remote within the US or based in our NYC bureau.

You Will:
  • Write articles on personal finance topics that are relevant for WSJ subscribers.
  • Ensure that sources/sourcing are appropriate for the topic.
  • Collaborate with the editorial and commerce teams on article lineups for future months to ensure relevancy for the WSJ audience.
  • Have an understanding of the WSJ.com audience to ensure articles are properly serving our audience’s needs.
  • Work proactively with partners in the spirit of providing useful service to readers
  • Write polished, clear prose that balances sensitivity with expertise.
  • Work well under pressure and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
  • Be meticulous in copy and ambitious in reporting, ensuring accuracy and depth in all coverage.
  • Recommend linking opportunities to recent WSJ news articles where topics align.
  • Ensure accuracy and journalistic standards for all content.
You Have
  • 3+ years of reporting experience.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, while delivering quality content.
  • Fluency in consumer finance and economics.
  • A track record of writing unique, engaging financial stories.
  • A knack for finding unique angles off the news.
  • Familiarity with affiliate revenue operations and search engine optimization is preferred
