Job summary

Abbott in Phoenix, AZ is seeking a Molecular Technologist I to isolate and quantify nucleic acids, perform PCR and next generation sequencing (NGS), library construction, and other NGS‑related procedures in the Oncology Diagnostics unit.

Schedule: Wednesday–Saturday 2:00pm–12:30am. You will process patient samples, extract nucleic acids, build libraries, operate robotic systems, troubleshoot instruments, and uphold quality and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology.

Responsibilities

• Perform processing of patient samples using molecular biology protocols governed by SOPs.
• Extract nucleic acids from sample types including tissue, blood and saliva.
• Construct DNA/RNA libraries and perform NGS workflows.
• Operate liquid handling robots and maintain associated equipment.
• Analyze data, troubleshoot issues and maintain documentation in LIMS and other systems.

Position Overview

The Molecular Technologist I will isolate and quantify nucleic acids, perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and next generation sequencing (NGS), library construction, and other NGS-associated procedures. Schedule: Wednesday – Saturday 2:00pm – 12:30am

Essential Duties

• Perform processing of patient samples using molecular biology protocols governed by standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Extract nucleic acids from sample types; including, but not limited to, human tissue, blood, and saliva.
• Construct DNA/RNA libraries and NGS.
• Operate liquid handling robots.
• Analyze and problem solve basic sample and/or plate issues.
• Review patient and control data, and document according to laboratory quality procedures; identify and communicate shifts, trends, or abnormal data; provide resolution options and recommendation with supportive information, as needed.
• Maintain sufficient inventory of laboratory supplies for daily operations; work closely with the supply chain group to support point of use (POU) supplies.
• Assist with the training of new laboratory personnel.
• Perform daily maintenance and monitor the laboratory equipment.
• Troubleshoot basic instrumentation issues.
• Assist with the development and upkeep of SOPs.
• Document activities and results in the laboratory information management software (LIMS) system and worksheets.
• Perform environmental health and safety functions, as needed.
• Act as a point of contact for the temperature alarm systems and respond to ensure integrity of specimens and reagents, as needed.
• Ability to integrate and apply feedback in a professional manner.

• Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment; including next generation sequencing instruments, liquid handling robotics, and biosafety cabinets.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
• Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in molecular diagnostics to include DNA Isolation, PCR, Real Time PCR, or sequencing.
• Experience in next-generation sequencing (NGS).
• Possession of a MB(ASCP) certification.
• 1+ years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience.

The base pay for this position is $20.50 – $41.00/hour. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
