Responsibilities
  • Prepare slides of human tissue to provide data on causes and/or progress of disease.
  • Perform procedures such as microtomy, staining, coverslipping of H&E, special stains, and immunohistochemistry as described in procedure manuals.
  • Embed tissue in paraffin, section, stain, and mount specimens.
  • Prepare reagents, stains, and solutions.
  • Maintain logs of procedures, temperatures, controls, and quality control documentation.
  • Recognize malfunctions of procedures or instruments and perform maintenance.
  • Participate in special projects and attend educational programs as required.
  • Use laboratory computer systems for documentation and accessioning.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with safety policies.
  • Demonstrate performance excellence and participate in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Use resources efficiently and responsibly.
  • Assess and communicate effectively with patients of different ages.
Additional Functions
  • Notify supervisor of low supplies.
  • Assist pathologists with gross specimen descriptions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical and Sensory Requirements

Includes sitting, standing, walking, manual manipulation, occasional lifting, bending, reaching, and visual and auditory acuity necessary for the role.

Most Complex Duty

Preparing high-quality slides of human tissue for microscopic diagnosis.

Qualifications
  • Education: Associates Degree, High School diploma, or equivalent.
  • Experience: HT (ASCP), HTL (ASCP) registered or eligible, with at least three years of experience; previous experience in anatomic pathology preferred.
