Responsibilities

Job Summary: Reporting to the PracticeManager, the Histotechnician is responsible for following the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, and reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. Histotechnician keeps the Manager and Physicians regularly informed about the work in progress and any problems that may occur.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and processes tissue specimens for frozen section analysis during Mohs surgery.
  • Accurately logs and labels patient specimens following established protocols.
  • Embeds, cuts, and stains frozen tissue sections using cryostat and staining equipment.
  • Ensures high-quality slide preparation for same-day review by the Mohs surgeon.
  • Maintains equipment and ensures proper function of cryostat, staining equipment, and other lab instruments.
  • Assists with maintenance of specimen records, slide filing, and general lab organization.
  • Monitors inventory levels and orders supplies as needed to ensure uninterrupted workflow.
  • Adheres to safety and infection control protocols.
  • Participates in quality assurance and continuous improvement activities as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the Mohs surgical team.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • HT(ASCP) certification or eligible preferred; equivalent Mohs histotech experience acceptable.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience preparing frozen sections in a Mohs surgery setting strongly preferred.
  • Experience in embedding, cutting, staining, and troubleshooting frozen tissue specimens required.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must have the skills equivalent to those taught in an accredited Histotechnology program.
  • If hired in a Mohs lab, must be qualified as high complexity testing personnel under CLIA regulations.
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of computers.
  • Ability to read and understand written protocols, lab reference manuals, and memos.
  • Manage large volumes of work accurately.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds at times.
Licensure/Certifications/Education
