Job summary

The Histotechnologist position at 61st Street Service Corporation supports ColumbiaDoctors and Mohs/Dermatopathology lab workflows. The role focuses on embedding, microtomy, staining, and tissue processing to ensure rapid turnaround and quality control, collaborating with leaders in dermatologic surgery and dermatopathology.

Requirements include NYSED licensure as a Histotechnologist or CLT, 2+ years in pathology labs, and relevant certifications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalency in education, training, and experience required.
  • NYSED licensure as Histotechnologist or Clinical Laboratory Technologist preferred.
  • HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification preferred.
  • Completion of Mohs histology training program preferred (ASMH) preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in a Mohs/Dermatopathology laboratory preferred.

Responsibilities

  • H&E, special and IH staining and cover slipping of all prepared slides.
  • Perform daily microtomy on paraffin tissue blocks.
  • Embed tissue with proper orientation.
  • Perform grossing/dissection of Dermatology biopsy specimens.
  • Change the solutions on tissue processors.
  • Freeze and stain frozen tissue sections and cut with the cryostat.
  • Label, file and store slides.
  • Prepare inventories and handle solutions and reagents used in the Mohs lab.
  • Dispose stains and clean glass containers.
  • Assist laboratory management in maintaining CLEP requirements.
  • Maintain and record daily temperatures of the cryostat.
  • Maintain laboratory record keeping; update SOPM and daily logbooks.
  • Participate in studies by maintaining proper records.
  • Change fume hood filters, safety glasses, gloves, etc.
  • Cover Mohs Histotechs in Lead Histotech’s absence.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Prepare and process tissue samples for ELISA testing.
  • Follow standardized protocols for antigen extraction, blocking, and antibody incubation.
  • Operate ELISA equipment and maintain reagent quality.
  • Document results and ensure CLIA/OSHA compliance.
  • Perform immunohistochemical staining on papilloma or skin lesion specimens.
  • Apply antibodies to detect target proteins (HPV, differentiation markers).
  • Interpret staining patterns under the microscope and label slides accordingly.

This position will support ColumbiaDoctors, one of the largest multi-specialty practices in the Northeast. ColumbiaDoctors’ practices comprise an experienced group of more than 2,800 physicians, surgeons, dentists, and nurses, offering more than 240 specialties and subspecialties.

Job Summary:

The Histotechnologist is responsible for embedding, microtomy, staining, grossing, and general tissue processing to assist the physician with patient care. Incumbent will ensure the efficiency and rapid turnaround of all histology samples. The Histotech will support the Director of Dermatologic Surgery and Director of Dermatopathology. This role is crucial to the Mohs and Dermpath lab workflow and is a vital team member. They will collaborate closely with the Lead Mohs Histotech and Dermatopathology Lab Manager to maintain optimal quality control and accurate processing, thereby supporting the Department’s clinical care, research, and education goals.

Job Responsibilities:
  • H&E, special and IH staining and cover slipping of all prepared slides.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
ELISA Testing
  • Prepare and process tissue samples for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.
  • Follow standardized protocols for antigen extraction, blocking, and antibody incubation.
  • Operate ELISA equipment and maintain reagent quality.
  • Document results and ensure compliance with CLIA/OSHA standard.
  • Perform immunohistochemical staining on papilloma or skin lesion specimens.
  • Apply specific antibodies to detect target proteins (e.g., HPV, differentiation markers)
  • Interpret staining patterns under the microscope and label slides accordingly.
Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalency in education, training, and experience required.
  • Licensed by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED) as a Histotechnologist, Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Technician, Histotechnician, or Pathologist’s Assistant.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a pathology laboratory required.
  • NYSED licensure as a Histotechnologist or Clinical Laboratory Technologist preferred.
  • HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification preferred.
  • Completion of a recognized Mohs histology training program preferred (ASMH) preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in a Mohs/Dermatopathology laboratory preferred.
Hourly Rate Ranges: $42.93 - $61.06

Note: Our salary offers will fall within these ranges based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to experience, skill set, training and education.
