Job description

Lake Chelan School District has an immediate opening for the 2026/2027 school year for a Special Education Paraeducator. Placement will be at Morgen Owings Elementary for up to 8 hours a day including time riding the school bus with students in the afternoons; depending on needs.

Position Overview

The Special Education Paraprofessional supports students with special needs. This role involves working under the supervision of a special education teacher to implement individualized education plans (IEPs), providing direct assistance to students, and helping create a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Compensation

Salary range is $22.92 – $26.69 per hour dependent upon prior school district experience in the same job classification. (An additional 75 cents ($.75) per hour is available for an individual with an AA degree, 1 dollar ($1.00) per hour for a BA degree and 25 cents ($.25) per hour for 50 clock hours.)

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree or 72 college credits OR pass the ParaPro Assessment
• Previous experience working with children with disabilities preferred.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. Basic knowledge of child development and special education practices
• Valid first aid/CPR card or willingness to obtain
• Washington State Patrol, FBI and Sexual Misconduct clearance
• Other job requirements as included in the district’s Para educator job description
• Position is subject to temporary reassignment within the district, if needed
• Bilingual skills preferred (English/Spanish)

Key Responsibilities

Student Support

• Assist students with disabilities in learning and practicing daily living skills such as hygiene, dressing, grooming, and feeding.
• Provide support with academic tasks, adapting materials, and modifying curriculum as directed by the special education teacher.
• Support students in developing social skills, communication skills, and appropriate behavior.

Instructional Assistance

• Implement IEP goals and objectives under the supervision of the special education teacher.
• Use a variety of instructional techniques and learning strategies to meet the individual needs of students.

Classroom Management

• Help maintain a safe and supportive classroom environment conducive to learning.
• Monitor student behavior and implement behavior management strategies as directed.

Data Collection and Documentation

• Collect and record data on student progress and behavior as required by the special education teacher and IEP team.
• Maintain accurate and confidential student records.

Collaboration and Communication

• Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other staff to support student learning and development.
• Participate in team meetings, professional development, and training sessions as required.

Physical Assistance

• Provide physical assistance to students as needed, including lifting, transferring, and positioning.
• Assist with the use of adaptive equipment and technology.

Other Duties

• Perform other related duties as assigned by the special education teacher or school administration.
• Flexibility of riding on the bus with students either in the mornings or afternoons to assist students and drivers.
• Support the overall mission and vision of the school and special education program.

Physical Demands

• Ability to perform tasks involving physical activity, which may include moderate lifting and positioning of students.
• Ability to remain on feet for extended periods of time.
