Job description

Description and Responsibilities

Schlumberger-Doll Research (SDR), SLB's global research and innovation center, is seeking a Modeling & Simulation Research Scientist to join our multidisciplinary team in Cambridge, Massachusetts, adjacent to the MIT campus.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research addressing some of the world's most pressing energy challenges. Working at the intersection of science, engineering, and advanced computing, you will help develop next‑generation process systems that enable cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable energy solutions.

The position is part of the Geosciences Department and focuses on advancing SLB's capabilities in multiphysics modeling of subsurface systems. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with scientists, engineers, and subject matter experts to develop innovative simulation technologies that integrate thermo‑hydraulic processes, geomechanics, and geochemistry. As research priorities evolve, the role will expand to support emerging projects and strategic initiatives across SLB's energy portfolio.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and validate advanced numerical models for coupled subsurface processes.
  • Design and evaluate new algorithms integrating thermo‑hydraulic simulations with geochemical models.
  • Contribute to the development of next‑generation simulation workflows and computational tools.
  • Perform reservoir‑scale studies to assess and benchmark model performance using laboratory, field, and production data.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams spanning geoscience, reservoir engineering, formation evaluation, data science, and software development.
  • Analyze and interpret simulation results to generate scientific insights and support research decisions.
  • Publish findings in leading scientific journals and present research at internal and external technical forums.
  • Support the transition of research innovations into practical applications and field deployment.
Qualifications
Required
  • MSc or PhD in Geosciences, Petroleum Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a research or technical role within the geosciences field.
  • Experience with commercial or open‑source subsurface simulation tools.
  • Familiarity with scientific computing and programming languages such as Python, C/C++, Fortran, or MATLAB.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.
Preferred
  • Experience with SLB software solutions such as Intersect, Visage, and Petrel.
  • Knowledge of coupled multiphysics simulations involving flow, geomechanics, and geochemistry.
  • Experience publishing scientific research and presenting technical work to diverse audiences.
Compensation and Benefits

The compensation and benefits for this role are listed in compliance with applicable law.
