About Atomic Machines:

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era in micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler (MC) technology. The MC enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The MC promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing both for the many device classes that never could be made by semiconductor methods but also to open up entirely new classes. Furthermore, the MC is fully digital in the way 3D printing is digital, but where 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the MC is a multi-process, multi-material technology: bits and raw materials go in and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler – that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.

About This Role:

We are seeking an experienced senior Modeling and Simulation Engineer to join our growing team within the AI and ModSim group. An ideal candidate should have experience in developing and deploying mathematical and numerical models involving multiple connected physics domains. You should feel comfortable identifying critical system attributes of an existing device or a future concept and use them to derive, simulate, and deploy parametrized models that will support the company’s efforts in performance optimization, process sensitivity analysis, and generative design. Experience with modeling concepts (multiscale and multiphysics) and a variety of software tools (COMSOL, Ansys, etc.) is very important to be successful in this role. You will be required to have an in-depth understanding of / simulation experience in electromagnetism and thermal effects. Familiarity with other simulation domains, such as structural mechanics, is a bonus. This is an excellent career opportunity for a professional with a proven track record of creating and deploying high-quality, validated multiphysics models who is excited about using their skillset to help create new classes of devices to be fabricated and manufactured at scale on our revolutionary manufacturing platform. The ideal applicant thrives in a highly collaborative workplace, actively engages in the development process and is excellent at documenting and presenting work products.

What You’ll Do:

  • Determine critical system attributes and set up computational models for existing and future devices, with a strong emphasis on electromagnetic and thermal models.
  • Define figures of merit and boundary/operating conditions based on your understanding of the system and its requirements, as well as input from other engineers.
  • Set up and deploy dynamic multiphysics simulations (electromagnetic, thermal, mechanics) via Finite Elements and/or Finite Volumes models for transient and static analyses to aid design and process decisions.
  • Deliver executable computational models to support the company’s efforts in process sensitivity analysis, optimal design, and other engineering analyses as needed to improve robustness of designs and processes.
  • Systematically document methods and their validation. Document and visualize results and present findings and recommendations to the team.
  • Recommend model validation experiments and use results of such experiments to validate and improve models.
  • Work collaboratively in cross-functional engineering teams with prototype engineers, device designers and AI engineers.
  • Train other engineers in modeling and simulation tools.

What You’ll Need:

  • 6+ years (after Masters) of hands-on experience building multiphysics models and simulations.
  • Strong foundation in modeling and simulation of multiphysics, with required knowledge of dynamic electromagnetic, electrostatic, and thermal effects.
  • Knowledge of structural mechanics, piezoelectric, piezoresistive, and fluid dynamics is welcome.
  • Programming experience, particularly in Python scripting, and experience in automation of simulations to support automated and autonomous optimization and design.
  • Industrial experience in modeling and simulating electromagnetic and thermal effects.
  • FEA experience using COMSOL and/or Ansys in multiple coupled physics (experience with Abaqus, Siemens products, etc. is appreciated as well). Being resourceful, flexible and adaptable; no task is too big or too small.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently and/or cross-functionally.
  • Masters or Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

Bonus points for:

  • Experience in computer aided design (CAD) using Fusion 360, SolidWorks, NX or other CAD tools.
  • Experience with data visualization and analysis tools such as JMP, Matlab, Pandas, matplotlib, etc.
  • Industry experience in product development processes such as Agile, ICSM, etc.
  • Experience with MEMS.

The compensation for this position also includes equity and benefits.
