Job summary

Amazon is seeking a Modeling and Simulation Engineer to develop models of the LEO satellite constellation and user-terminal algorithms, validating performance globally. You will collaborate across teams to maintain constellation models and integrate with terminal software, simulating motion, trajectories, and sensor fusion for robust handover performance.

The role focuses on architecting, developing, integrating, and verifying core algorithms within a simulation framework, supporting both

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or an equivalent field.
  • 5+ years of experience in satellite system design, modeling, and analysis, or equivalently complex time-dynamic systems.
  • 4+ years of experience developing code in MATLAB or Python, with familiarity in industry-standard coding and regression practices.
  • Experience working in a small team and drive beyond expectations to deliver results.

Responsibilities

  • Develop models of Amazon LEO's satellite constellation and user terminal algorithms to validate user terminal performance globally.
  • Collaborate with partner teams to develop and maintain the constellation model.
  • Integrate the LEO satellite constellation with various user terminal algorithms.
  • Develop motion trajectory and orientation models for mobility vehicles/vessels, including aviation, automotive, and maritime platforms.
  • Simulate nominal and off-nominal operating cases for mobile user terminals.
  • Validate end-to-end integration of the Sensor Fusion algorithm with other user terminal software and the satellite constellation.
  • Develop test vectors to stress user terminals across all application cases, including residential, aviation, maritime, and automotive.
  • Model all application cases—maritime, automotive, and aviation—by developing a sensor fusion model that feeds near-real-time vessel trajectory data to evaluate cell handover, satellite handover, performance at cell boundaries, and handover triggers.
  • Analyze and model hardware/software capabilities and constraints to optimize run-time algorithms in the user terminal.

Job description

At Amazon, we’re inventing on behalf of customers, and with Amazon Leo, we’re redefining what global connectivity looks like. Our mission is to deliver fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities around the world through a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Every system we build helps connect people to education, healthcare, opportunity, and each other.

Key job responsibilities

As a Modeling and Simulation Engineer, you develop models of Amazon LEO's satellite constellation and user terminal algorithms to validate user terminal performance globally. This includes:

  • Collaborating with partner teams to develop and maintain Amazon LEO's constellation model
  • Integrating the LEO satellite constellation with various user terminal algorithms
  • Developing motion trajectory and orientation models for mobility vehicles/vessels, including aviation, automotive, and maritime platforms
  • Simulating nominal and off-nominal operating cases for mobile user terminals
  • Validating the end-to-end integration of the Sensor Fusion algorithm with other user terminal software and the satellite constellation
  • Developing test vectors to stress user terminals across all application cases, including residential, aviation, maritime, and automotive
  • Modeling all application cases—maritime, automotive, and aviation—by developing a sensor fusion model that feeds near-real-time vessel trajectory data to evaluate cell handover, satellite handover, performance at cell boundaries, and handover triggers
  • Analyzing and modeling hardware/software capabilities and constraints to optimize run-time algorithms in the user terminal
Export Control Requirement

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

A day in the life

As a Modeling and Simulation Engineer on the LEO Customer Terminal Team, you will work daily with satellite constellation, algorithm, RF, antenna, silicon, and software teams in a collaborative environment. Your focus will be on architecting, developing, integrating, and verifying customer terminal core algorithms within a simulation framework.

About the team

The LEO Customer Terminal team is responsible for developing both outdoor and indoor devices that enable customers to access internet service via the LEO satellite network. We own the entire process from early prototypes through mass production, including requirements documentation, architecture definition, hardware development, algorithm development, and all integration and verification testing.

Basic Qualifications
  • Experience with Linux/Unix
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or an equivalent field
  • 5+ years of experience in satellite system design, modeling, and analysis, or equivalently complex time-dynamic systems
  • 4+ years of experience developing code in MATLAB or Python, with familiarity in industry-standard coding and regression practices
  • Experience conducting and documenting trade studies and design trades
  • Experience working in a small team and drive beyond expectations to deliver results
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or PhD degree in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or an equivalent field
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Experience taking a leading role in building complex algorithm or computing infrastructure that has been successfully delivered to customers
  • Experience in space vehicle/satellite operations, space communications, or a related industry
  • Experience in satellite constellation design and management trades
  • Experience modeling orbits, reference frames, and efficiently using vector geometry to simulate time-varying relative geometry of satellites and ground nodes
  • Experience in embedded wireless systems, or experience with general troubleshooting and debugging of hardware
  • Experience working with mobility satellite terminals, such as maritime and aeronautical
  • Familiarity with phased array designs and implementations
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/network development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and live-site operations
