Job summary

Chesapeake College seeks experienced welding professionals to serve as Mobile Welding Lab Instructors for workforce training programs delivered throughout the region. This position provides hands-on welding instruction in a mobile training environment designed to prepare participants for employment in manufacturing, construction, shipbuilding, and other skilled trades industries.

The Mobile Welding Lab Instructor will deliver intensive daytime training cohorts consisting of approximately 4 days

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of three years full-time welding experience.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Deliver hands-on welding instruction in a mobile training laboratory.
• Teach welding safety, metallurgy, blueprint reading, and welding theory as appropriate.
• Instruct students in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, oxy-fuel cutting, and plasma cutting processes.
• Demonstrate proper welding techniques and safe equipment operation.
• Evaluate student performance through practical welding assessments and classroom activities.
• Maintain attendance records, student progress reports, and required program documentation.
• Ensure compliance with all safety standards and procedures.
• Assist with setup, operation, and maintenance of equipment within the mobile welding lab.
• Foster a positive, inclusive, and professional learning environment.
• Travel to training locations throughout Chesapeake College's service region.

Description:

Chesapeake College seeks experienced welding professionals to serve as Mobile Welding Lab Instructors for workforce training programs delivered throughout the region. This position provides hands-on welding instruction in a mobile training environment designed to prepare participants for employment in manufacturing, construction, shipbuilding, and other skilled trades industries.

The Mobile Welding Lab Instructor will deliver intensive daytime training cohorts consisting of approximately 4 days per week for 4 to 5 weeks. Programs are typically offered 3 to 5 times annually, depending on employer, grant-funded, and community workforce needs.

The instructor reports to the Director of Skilled Trades and is responsible for providing quality instruction, maintaining a safe learning environment, and supporting student success.

Example of Duties:

• Deliver hands-on welding instruction in a mobile training laboratory.
• Teach welding safety, metallurgy, blueprint reading, and welding theory as appropriate.
• Instruct students in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW, oxy-fuel cutting, and plasma cutting processes.
• Demonstrate proper welding techniques and safe equipment operation.
• Evaluate student performance through practical welding assessments and classroom activities.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of three years of full-time experience in welding, fabrication, pipefitting, structural steel, manufacturing, shipbuilding, or a related field.
• Demonstrated proficiency in multiple welding processes.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and effectively in a mobile training environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• AWS certifications or other relevant industry credentials.
• Prior teaching, workforce training, apprenticeship, mentoring, or coaching experience.
• Experience working with adult learners and entry-level workforce participants.
• Experience with workforce development, apprenticeship, or grant-funded training programs.

Schedule:

• Daytime instructional assignment.
• Intensive training schedule of approximately 32 hours per week.
• Cohorts run 4 days per week for 4 to 5 consecutive weeks.
• Opportunities available approximately 3 to 5 times per year.
• Additional instructional opportunities may be available within Chesapeake College's Welding and Fabrication programs.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand for extended periods while instructing and demonstrating welding techniques.
• Ability to lift and move equipment and materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
• Ability to work in shop and outdoor training environments.
• Ability to travel to training locations throughout the service area.
