Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Safely operates university buses and passenger vehicles per laws and policies.
  • Transports passengers to local and distant destinations per schedules.
  • Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections of tires, lights, brakes, and safety equipment.
  • Completes logs, mileage, fuel, and travel records accurately and promptly.
  • Ensures passenger safety and comfort; monitors capacity and safety limits.
  • Maintains climate controls and interior lighting for passenger comfort.
  • Loads/unloads passengers and assists with boarding/exiting as needed.
  • Reports mechanical issues, delays, or incidents to the university promptly.

Job Summary:

Angelo State University is seeking a CDL Driver for our STEM Innovation Lab. The ASU STEM Innovation Lab is a high-tech mobile platform bringing immersive science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) experiences directly to rural and underserved communities across West Texas.



Essential Duties:


  1. Safely operates university-owned, leased, or rented buses and passenger vehicles in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and university policies.

  2. Transports authorized passengers to local and distant destinations according to approved schedules and itineraries.

  3. Conducts and documents required pre-trip and post-trip inspections, including inspections of tires, lights, brakes, emergency equipment, fluid levels, safety systems, and the general condition of the vehicle.

  4. Completes driver logs, mileage records, inspection reports, fuel records, passenger documentation, and other required travel records accurately and promptly.

  5. Ensures that passengers follow applicable safety requirements and that vehicle capacity and safety limitations are not exceeded.

  6. Maintains passenger comfort systems, including climate controls and interior lighting, as applicable.

  7. Safely loads and unloads passengers and assists passengers with boarding and exiting when appropriate.

  8. Secures the vehicle whenever it is unattended and checks the passenger compartment at the conclusion of each trip.

  9. Immediately reports mechanical concerns, unsafe conditions, delays, traffic citations, collisions, injuries, and other incidents to the appropriate university representative.

  10. Follows university procedures for accidents, emergencies, roadside breakdowns, severe weather, and other unexpected events.

  11. Maintains professional conduct and provides courteous service when interacting with students, employees, minors, guests, and members of the public.

  12. Complies with all applicable U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Department of Transportation, TTU System, and Angelo State University requirements.

  13. Participates in required university driver training, safety training, drug and alcohol testing, medical certification, and driver-approval processes.

  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of safe commercial vehicle and passenger transportation practices.

  • Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, commercial driver requirements, passenger-carrier safety requirements, and vehicle inspection procedures.

  • Ability to safely operate the class and type of vehicle assigned by the university.

  • Ability to complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections and recognize conditions that may make a vehicle unsafe to operate.

  • Ability to read and follow maps, electronic navigation systems, schedules, itineraries, and written instructions.

  • Ability to maintain accurate driving, inspection, mileage, fuel, and travel records.

  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies, vehicle malfunctions, adverse road conditions, and schedule changes.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with passengers, university employees, law enforcement personnel, emergency responders, and members of the public.

  • Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with the supervising department.

  • Ability to work irregular schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, early mornings, overnight trips, and extended travel.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate judgment when transporting students, minors, employees, or other university participants.

  • Ability to comply with ASU driver approval, insurance, safety, and risk-management requirements.

  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle.

  • Ability to safely enter and exit buses multiple times during shifts.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.

  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions.



Minimum Qualifications:


  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • At least 20 years of age.

  • At least two years of licensed driving experience.

  • Current and valid Commercial Driver License (CDL) of the class required for the vehicle being operated.

  • Current Passenger endorsement, or "P" endorsement, when operating a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more occupants, including the driver.

  • Must not have a license restriction that prevents operation of the assigned university vehicle.

  • Must possess and maintain any medical certification required for the assigned commercial driving duties.

  • Must meet Angelo State University driver-approval requirements and receive approval from the university’s insurance carrier and Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management before operating a university vehicle.

  • Must have an acceptable motor vehicle record.

  • Must successfully complete all required criminal history, driving record, employment, and other applicable background checks.

  • Must satisfy all applicable U.S. Department of Transportation and FMCSA drug and alcohol testing requirements, including pre-employment testing.

  • Must authorize and successfully complete the required FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse query before performing safety-sensitive CDL duties.

  • Must remain eligible under applicable CDL, DOT, FMCSA, Texas DPS, TTU System, and university requirements throughout employment.

  • Must be able and willing to work irregular hours and travel locally or overnight as required.

  • Strong communication and customer service skills.



ASU currently requires all employees who operate university-owned, leased, or rented vehicles to complete its driver-approval process. ASU also states that drivers operating vehicles holding more than 15 passengers must possess a valid Texas CDL with the appropriate endorsements. (Angelo State University) Federal guidance similarly requires a CDL with a passenger endorsement for vehicles designed to transport 16 or more people, including the driver. (FMCSA)



Preferred Qualifications:


  • Previous bus driving experience in higher education, public transit, school transportation, charter service, or commercial transportation.

  • Current Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification.

  • Experience transporting large groups and operating motor coaches or commercial passenger buses.

  • Knowledge of vehicle inspection procedures and defensive driving practices.
