Job summary

Compass Rail Services LLC is seeking a Mobile Railcar Repair Technician to inspect, diagnose, and repair railcars at customer sites, rail yards, or remote locations. The role requires strong mechanical skills, valve work expertise, and the ability to work independently with a focus on safety and compliance with federal regulations.

Starting compensation ranges from $25.00 to $35.00 per hour based on experience.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 2+ years of railcar repair or valve work experience.
• Familiarity with FRA and AAR regulations.
• Experience with valve repair tools and hydrostatic testing.
• Welding certification (FCAW, SMAW) is a plus.
• Valid driver's license; CDL preferred.
• Ability to read valve schematics and manuals.
• Attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, maintain, and repair freight railcars at customer sites and yards.
• Inspect, test, remove, install, and repair valves and fittings on tank cars.
• Perform valve seat resurfacing, lapping, and leak testing using approved procedures.
• Troubleshoot mechanical problems and perform structural and running gear repairs.
• Ensure all repairs comply with FRA, AAR, and company standards.
• Complete inspection forms, repair records, and regulatory paperwork.
• Operate welding/cutting equipment for structural repairs when required.
• Drive and operate a service truck with tools and repair materials.
• Maintain inventory of valve parts and tools.
• Communicate repair status with dispatchers, supervisors, and customers.
