Job description

Job Summary

This employee operates the mobile harbor crane in the movement of cargo on the public docks of the Port of Brownsville and performs preventative maintenance to the crane. This crane includes a telescopic spreader bar for handling containers, a dual scoop motor grab, and a polyp-grab with a hydraulic unit.

Job Responsibilities

  • Duties include the preventive maintenance of the crane. The operation of the crane will necessitate night, weekend and holiday shifts, and overtime will be authorized as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Responsibilities

  • Completes continuing education training as required by BND.
  • Ensures to maintain certifications related to mobile crane operation requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Must have three to five years of experience in operating a 30+ ton crane.
  • Must have hands-on experience in the use of computerized controls to operate heavy equipment and/or computerized diagnostic for heavy equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written direction.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions.

Work Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Frequent exposure to outside weather conditions such as heat, cold, dust, and vehicle exhaust.
  • Medium physical effort including long periods of sitting, up to 8 continuous hours, and occasional lifting of objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Withstand prolonged periods of standing, walking, and/or sitting.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders in order to get to crane cabin.
  • Frequent contact with the public.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Selected candidate must pass a post-employment drug screening and background investigation to be hired for this position.
