About this position:

The positions may be located in the following parishes: Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard

The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority - East (SLFPA-E) operates the regional flood control system and associated facilities in St. Bernard Parish, east-bank of Orleans Parish, and the east-bank of Jefferson Parish within its control to protect lives and property from tidal flooding by natural weather events.

Minimum Qualifications:

No experience or training is required.

Function of Work: To operate light mobile equipment to accomplish transportation, maintenance, or construction tasks.

Level of Work: Experienced.

Supervision Received: General supervision from a Foreman or other supervisor or higher-level maintenance personnel.

Supervision Exercised: May exercise leadworker responsibility over laborers or other lower-graded personnel.

Location of Work: May be used by all agencies, statewide.

Job Distinctions: Differs from laboring classes by the requirement to operate light mobile equipment and/or vehicles as a primary, regular, and recurring duty. It also differs from Mobile Equipment Operator 1 by the restriction to primary operation of lighter mobile equipment.

Job Duties:

The incumbent performs physical tasks in the Maintenance Department, under supervision of a Levee Foreman A or higher, including:

  • 35% Cutting and trimming grass within the Flood Protection Authority right-of-way using gas/diesel-powered tools such as weed eaters, pole saws, chainsaws, lawnmowers, edgers, loppers, hand pruners, and self-propelled cutting equipment.
  • 35% Cutting grass with self-propelled equipment.
  • 15% Removing trash and debris from the right-of-way, operating vehicles and equipment safely, and securing trailers and equipment.
  • 10% Performing miscellaneous labor duties like yard cleaning, vehicle washing, tree trimming, graffiti removal, and sandbagging.
  • 5% Filling and handling sandbags as required.

The incumbent must have a valid Louisiana driver’s license. SLFPA-E is an emergency-oriented agency, and the incumbent must be on call during emergencies such as Mississippi River flooding and hurricanes, ready to report for duty as required.
