MOBILE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR HEAVY- 2 COASTAL LAFAYETTE REGION

This position is a Mobile Equipment Operator 2 – Heavy in the Coastal Lafayette Region and reports directly to a Maintenance Foreman. Two positions will be filled. This is a highly skilled position that requires a high degree of precision and safety in the operation of large mobile equipment on and off barges, in soft fluid marsh soils, as well as on solid ground; all in the support of marsh management and erosion control projects as well as facility construction. The incumbent will operate heavy equipment such as bulldozers, draglines, tractors, pile drivers, backhoes, excavators (land-based, amphibious), trucks and boats and provides maintenance and minor repairs to this equipment.

Some work requires moderate efforts and some will require brief period in which heavy muscular exertion and strenuous physical exertion in climbing, lifting objects over 50 pounds, or crouching or crawling in restricted areas is required. Travel throughout Louisiana, including overnight stay and early morning departure is required, as well as night work in boats and airboats. Incumbent will be required to stay on remote facilities, tugs and houseboats for up to 8 days and 7 nights at a time and work a revolving 8 days on 6 days off "hitch". Travel per diem is paid for most overnight travel.

Job Duties

The incumbent is responsible for the following (note: excavators may be land-based or amphibious):

  • Operates excavators, draglines, and cranes to dig channels in waterways and to build levees
  • Operates excavators in marsh areas to rebuild and repair levees, marsh terraces, and drainage ditches
  • Operates bulldozers and backhoes to clear land, new excavation, spreading dirt and aggregates, and for land leveling
  • Operates farm tractors in clearing brush, mowing, moving dirt and aggregates, grading roads and fields
  • Operates pile driver and vibratory hammer to drive pilings and sheet piles for various structures
  • Operates excavators and cranes to load and offload equipment and supplies at remote facilities and docks
  • Operates excavators, trucks, dump trucks, and boats to transport material, supplies, and equipment to job sites
  • Makes minor repairs to equipment and performs user maintenance which is necessary to keep equipment in clean, good working order
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Position-Specific Details

Appointment Type: Job appointment, probational appointment, promotional, or detail to special duty.

Positions will be domiciled in Lafayette Parish.
