Job summary

Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is seeking a Substitute Teacher to provide continuity in learning during the regular teacher’s absence at Title 1a schools in Madison, WI.

The role involves following lesson plans, using recommended materials, and applying diverse teaching methods to engage students and maintain a positive classroom environment. Onboarding may include a paid substitute training for licensing and the ability to pick up assignments.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or higher required for permit/guest substitute.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in education for a certified teacher.
  • Active Wisconsin DPI teaching license or substitute teaching license (can be obtained after onboarding).
  • Required to pick up assignments.
  • Experience working with children and youth.
  • Experience cross‑culturally and/or commitment to improving cultural competence.

Responsibilities

  • Follow lesson plans provided by the regular teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience.
  • Apply effective instructional practices and teaching strategies.
  • Utilize various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups, equitably.
  • Provide classroom management, establishing clear objectives and expectations.
  • Establish equitable rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order.
  • Manage the classroom to encourage student participation, minimize distractions, and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Engage students in meaningful ways to contribute to classroom culture and learning success.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by school administration.

Job description

Pay

$200 - 7+ days in a monthly pay period at any of our Title 1a schools.

Purpose

Under the supervision of a building principal, the MMSD Substitute Teacher provides students with continuity in the learning process by implementing classroom instruction during the regular teacher’s absence. Duties include quickly building connections, managing classroom behavior, interpreting and following lesson plans, and creating reports to inform the permanent teacher of student success.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or higher for permit/guest substitute teacher.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in education for a certified teacher.

  • Required to pick up assignments.
  • Experience working with children and youth.
  • Experience working cross‑culturally and/or commitment to improving cultural competence.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish and/or Hmong.
  • Experience providing instructional practice.
  • Special Education certification and/or experience coaching/teaching children and youth with disabilities.
