WindBorne Systems, based in Redwood City, CA, seeks a Machine Learning Research Engineer to advance our AI weather models. The role focuses on identifying impactful problems, developing experiments, and pushing model performance in practical settings.

You will work across data assimilation, foundation models for weather, and scalable ML pipelines, collaborating with a team of engineers and researchers to turn ideas into reliable systems.

Qualifications

• Strong research taste and ability to identify important questions.
• Deep enthusiasm for ML and understanding models beyond black-box use.
• Strong Python and PyTorch skills; able to develop and debug ML systems.
• Experience with large, messy datasets and building dependable pipelines.
• Able to iterate quickly while building durable infrastructure.
• Willing to bridge research and engineering and learn new tools as needed.
• Experience with weather, climate, geospatial data, scientific ML, CV, or time-series forecasting is helpful.

Responsibilities

• AI-based data assimilation — Develop methods to incorporate real-time observations into forecasts.
• A foundation model for weather — Work toward a single model for multiple weather datasets.
• Messy, large weather datasets — Find, clean, and combine diverse data sources.
• Rapid experiments — Test ideas quickly and pursue incremental improvements.
• Infrastructure and systems — Turn experiments into reusable research infrastructure.
• Research direction — Form hypotheses and design convincing experiments.
• Whatever the problem needs — Assist across operations, infra, evaluation, or data engineering.
