Position Overview:

The Remote MIST Advice RN ensures patients across the California Bay Area receive timely, appropriate care by applying clinical expertise, critical thinking, and Sutter Health-approved protocols. This fully remote role provides advanced telephone and electronic support to patients and care teams, guiding care decisions, addressing urgent and routine concerns, and maintaining continuity across the care continuum.

Responsibilities


  • Conducts thorough telephone assessments using clinical judgment, the nursing process, and evidence-based protocols to determine the appropriate level of care and disposition.

  • Collaborates with primary and specialty care providers through electronic message management and clinical documentation within the electronic medical record (EMR).

  • Manages in-basket messages, triaging patient concerns, reviewing clinical information, and routing appropriately to ensure timely and safe follow-up.

  • Identifies and coordinates appointments, consultations, and access to community and system resources to meet patient needs.

  • Collaborates with multiple office teams and clinicians to provide excellent patient care telephonically.

  • Demonstrates active listening and strong critical judgment to perform high-quality telephonic assessments, ensuring every patient receives safe, timely, and appropriate care.

  • Follows a variety of clinical workflows and adapts to frequent change within a dynamic team environment that handles a high volume of inbound and outbound calls.

  • Engages in high-volume typing and multitasking to accurately document patient encounters in real time, supporting timely care coordination and alignment with team metrics.

  • Participates in ongoing quality audits and feedback processes to maintain high standards of care, ensure compliance with protocols, and support continuous improvement.

  • Attends monthly huddles virtually and actively participates with the rest of the team to promote collaboration and shared learning.

  • Demonstrates dependability, reliability, and a strong work ethic in supporting patients, providers, and team goals.

Qualifications

Education



  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing


Certification & Licensure



  • RN-Registered Nurse in the state where care is provided

  • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider


Department Required Certification & Licensure



  • Department, non-patient facing/care: BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider is Preferred.


Preferred Experience as Typically Acquired in:



  • 3 years recent relevant experience


Skills and Knowledge



  • Professional knowledge of clinical nursing protocols, regulations and institutional standards of care and risk management with an emphasis in the areas of disease processes, emergencies, health sciences and pharmacology.

  • Advanced clinical knowledge of medical diagnoses, procedures, protocols, treatments, and terminology, including a working knowledge of state and federal regulations and guidelines.

  • Solid analytical and project management skills, including the ability to analyze problems, situations, practices, and procedures, reach practical conclusions, recognize alternatives, provide solutions, and institute effective changes.

  • Communication, interpersonal, and interviewing skills, including the ability to build rapport and explain medical lab results or sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences (patients, staff, and doctors).

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and experience working electronic medical/health records.

  • Work independently and with the multidisciplinary team, while demonstrating exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Manage multiple priorities/projects simultaneously, sometimes with rapidly changing priorities, while maintaining event/project schedules.

  • Recognize unsafe or emergency situations and respond appropriately and professionally.

  • Ensure the privacy of each patient’s protected health information (PHI).

  • Analyze possible solutions using clinical judgement, existing departmental workflows and policies, experience and critical thinking to identify and solve standard problems.

  • Build collaborative relationships with peers, providers, nurses, administrators, and public to provide the highest quality of patient care.
