Job summary

The Salvation Army North & Central Illinois Division is seeking a Ministry Discovery Intern to observe and participate in corps ministry leadership, ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.

You will assist in worship, programming, community outreach, and social services, with requirements including a high school diploma, 1-year Salvation Army membership, and a valid driver’s license. Occasional travel and weekend/evening work expected.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
• Background check required and reviewed.
• One year membership with The Salvation Army.
• Valid driver’s license and Safe from Harm training within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Participate in Worship and Christian education programs (Sunday School, Bible Studies, Corps Cadets, Small Groups) including planning, leading meetings, preaching, teaching, and supporting others.
• Coordinate development of corps programming, worship arts, music programs, special programming (VBS, Day Camps, Outreaches), Character Building and Leadership Training.
• Represent the Army at community events.
• Support social services including food pantry, financial assistance, and Pathway of Hope.
• Assist in coordinating seasonal programs including Christmas Kettles, Angel Tree, Summer Day Camp and other events.
• Participate in pastoral and evangelistic ministries including Pastoral Care Council, Corps Council and Youth/Adult Planning Committees.
• Oversee property upkeep and facility preparation for programming.
• Support budgeting and fundraising efforts and thrift store operations.

Salary Range Starting at: $28,121.60/ annually

Job Objective

As the Ministry Discovery Intern, you will observe and participate in the leadership of all aspects of corps ministry ensuring that the Mission of The Salvation Army is effectively carried out.

What You Will Do

• Participate in and coordinate, as assigned, the development of corps programming, worship arts, music programs, special programming (VBS, Day Camps, Outreaches), Character Building and Leadership Training for corps members.

Minimum Qualifications:

The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal education, experience, skills, and/or abilities required for this position.

• Education: High School Diploma required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
• Background Checks: Position requires a background check to be completed and all background check results will be reviewed.
• Experience: One year membership with The Salvation Army.
• Certifications: Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain The Salvation Army Driver’s qualification standard; must complete Safe from Harm training within the first 90 days of employment.

Skills/Abilities

• Able to speak, write and understand English in a manner sufficient for effective communication with leadership, field personnel, and clientele
• Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and ability to learn electronic reporting systems
