Overview

The Millwright/Combination Welder is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical equipment and structural components, as well as performing high-quality welding in accordance with applicable codes and standards. This role supports plant reliability and ensures safe and efficient operations in industrial or petrochemical environments.

Responsibilities

Millwright Duties:

  • Install, dismantle, align, and repair machinery and mechanical equipment such as pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, compressors, and turbines.
  • Perform precision alignment using dial indicators, laser alignment tools, and other mechanical instruments.
  • Diagnose mechanical failures, disassemble and reassemble components, and replace worn or defective parts.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on rotating and static equipment.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, cranes, rigging, and hoists to move and position equipment safely.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, mechanical drawings, and equipment manuals.

Welding Duties:

  • Perform structural and pipe welding using SMAW (stick), GTAW (TIG), and/or GMAW (MIG) processes on carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy materials.
  • Prepare weld surfaces, measure and cut materials, and fit-up parts prior to welding.
  • Weld in various positions (flat, vertical, overhead, etc.) as required in shop and field conditions.
  • Follow welding procedure specifications (WPS), read isometric drawings, and perform work to ASME/API/NBIC code standards.
  • Conduct visual inspections and participate in hydro testing and non-destructive examination (NDE) prep as needed.
  • Maintain welding equipment, tools, and consumables in safe working condition.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Formal training or apprenticeship in millwright and welding trades preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in industrial or refinery settings performing both millwright and welding duties.
  • Proficient in blueprint reading, equipment alignment, rigging, and various welding techniques.
  • Must pass employer-administered weld test (e.g., 6G pipe test) and possess or be eligible for AWS/ASME certifications.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe work practices in confined spaces and elevated areas.
  • TWIC card required or able to obtain.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NCCER Millwright and/or Welding Certification.
  • Familiarity with API, ASME, and NBIC codes (especially B31.3, Section IX).
  • Experience working during shutdowns, turnarounds, or capital projects.
  • Basic knowledge of pipefitting, bolt torquing, and flange management.
Work Environment
  • Work performed in industrial, refinery, or petrochemical facilities.
Physical Requirements

Candidates must be physically capable of performing tasks that may include:

  • Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and reaching.
  • Standing and walking for long periods in a plant environment.
  • Pushing, pulling, lifting (up to 50 lbs. or more), and carrying heavy equipment or parts.
  • Grasping tools and performing repetitive mechanical movements.
  • Working in various environmental conditions including heat, noise, and confined spaces, with or without reasonable accommodation.
