Job summary

The YMCA of Greater Omaha is seeking a Summer Day Camp Counselor to create a positive camp environment for children aged 4-12 years. Base pay range

$13.50/hr - $14.16/hr

Position Summary

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. SDC Counselors create positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience.

Essential Functions

  • Supervises assigned group of children.
  • Supports SDC Director/Manager in planning and implementation of program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness.
  • Actively participates in department and branch staff meetings and trainings.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  • Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with children aged 4-12 years, preferably in a day camp setting
  • Ability to supervise and play with children in a pool setting required
  • Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor living, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games or art
  • Demonstrated leadership, dependability & flexibility in work hours
  • Ability to work independently with attention to detail required
  • Complete before first shift: program-specific training; all required abuse prevention training
  • Complete within 30 days of hire: YMCA cause & culture training; BLS CPR/AED/First Aid
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community and successful clearance of background check.
  • Follow youth boundaries policies and abuse risk management training.
  • Report suspicious behavior, policy violations, and adhere to mandated abuse reporting and responsibilities.
