Job summary

Blue Island Recycling, LLC is seeking a dependable Mill Laborer for our second shift in Blue Island, Illinois. You’ll support hammer mill and shredder operations, assist with material handling, cleanup, and general labor tasks in a busy scrap metal facility.

This role requires being safety minded, physically capable of demanding work, and able to work around heavy machinery and dust. 2:00 PM to 2:00 AM, Monday–Friday, with weekends off.

Responsibilities

• Perform general labor duties in support of hammer mill and shredder operations.
• Assist mill personnel with day-to-day tasks as directed.
• Handle, move, sort, and clean up material in designated areas.
• Remove loose material, debris, and scrap from designated areas.
• Perform routine housekeeping around mill work areas.
• Keep walkways and work areas clean and free of debris.
• Assist with mill and yard labor as needed.
• Use hand tools, brooms, shovels, and basic equipment as assigned.
• Follow supervisor instructions and safety procedures.

Job description

Blue Island Recycling, LLC is seeking a dependable and hardworking Mill Laborer to join our second shift team at our scrap metal recycling and processing facility in Blue Island, Illinois.

This is a hands on general labor position supporting the operation of our large industrial hammer mill and shredder used to process automobiles and other scrap metal.

The Mill Laborer will work as part of the mill crew and assist with general labor, material handling, cleanup, housekeeping, and other tasks necessary to support safe and efficient mill operations.

This is not a welding, fabrication, or mechanic position.

We are looking for someone who is dependable, safety minded, comfortable performing physically demanding work, and able to work in a fast paced industrial environment around heavy machinery, trucks, scrap metal, dirt, dust, grease, and noise.

Primary Responsibilities

• Perform general labor duties in support of hammer mill and shredder operations
• Assist mill personnel with day to day operational tasks as directed
• Assist with handling, moving, sorting, and cleaning up material in designated work areas
• Remove loose material, debris, and scrap from designated areas
• Perform routine housekeeping and cleanup around mill work areas
• Keep walkways and designated work areas clean and free of unnecessary debris
• Assist with general mill and yard related labor as needed
• Use hand tools, brooms, shovels, and other basic tools and equipment as assigned
• Follow instructions from supervisors and experienced mill personnel
• Follow all company safety procedures and remain alert to moving equipment, machinery, and other hazards
• Wear required personal protective equipment
• Immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment problems, or other concerns to a supervisor
• Assist other departments or perform other general labor duties as needed
• Perform other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications

• Previous experience in a scrap yard, recycling facility, manufacturing facility, construction site, or other industrial environment is preferred but not required
• Previous general labor or physically demanding work experience is preferred
• Must be dependable and maintain reliable attendance
• Must be able to follow instructions and work safely as part of a team
• Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds as required to perform job duties
• Must be able to perform physically demanding work throughout the scheduled shift, including standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying
• Must be comfortable working around large industrial machinery, heavy equipment, trucks, and scrap metal
• Must be comfortable working in an environment that may include dirt, dust, grease, noise, and changing weather conditions
• Must be able to reliably work the full scheduled shift
• Ability to speak Spanish is a plus but is not required

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is located at an active scrap metal recycling and processing facility.

Employees work around heavy machinery, trucks, mobile equipment, scrap metal, dirt, dust, grease, noise, and changing weather conditions.

This is a hands on and physically demanding position. Applicants should expect to be on their feet for extended periods, perform repetitive physical tasks, lift and carry materials weighing at least 50 pounds, and work in areas that may be dirty, dusty, noisy, or exposed to changing weather conditions.

Applicants must be comfortable working around active industrial equipment and following established safety procedures at all times.

SCHEDULE

Monday through Friday

2:00 PM to 2:00 AM

Weekends off

This is a full time second shift position. Applicants must be able to reliably work the entire scheduled shift.
