Shifts are 10 hours, including day, swing, and overnight options. A 10% PRN differential applies, with additional shift differentials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in human services or related field required.
  • BLS certification within 30 days of hire preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills essential.
  • Ability to assess crisis situations and intervene appropriately.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in development and implementation of treatment and disposition plans.
  • Provide crisis and behavior management/de-escalation interventions as needed.
  • Develop and facilitate daily psychoeducational groups.
  • Collaborate with clients to identify strengths and unmet needs for recovery.
  • Assist with intake procedures including documentation and orientation to the facility.
  • Assist with discharge procedures.
  • Conduct individual check-ins with clients and advocate to ensure team understanding of needs.
  • Provide trauma-informed interventions to minimize harm and empower clients.

Job description

Aurora Mental Health & Recovery (AMHR) is seeking a compassionate and adaptable Milieu Counselor (PRN) to join our Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) and support clients in need of short-term, intensive mental health care. In this role, you’ll provide oversight and support to individuals staying in the CSU for up to five days, helping maintain a safe and therapeutic environment through group and individual interactions, meal and activity assistance, safety checks, and responsive care in a fast-paced setting. Ideal candidates bring strong social and de-escalation skills, a genuine interest in mental health, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations—all while delivering excellent documentation and customer service.Schedule. The CSU is a 24/7 program open every day of the year, and Milieu Counselors work fully onsite/in person. Shifts are 10 hours in length, with options including the following. PRN staff are typically required to work at least two shifts per month.Day: 7:00 am - 5:00 pmOvernight: 9:00 pm - 7:00 amSwing Shift: 1:00 pm - 11:00 pmAvailability. This PRN role requires availability to complete initial in‑person orientation and training during new employee orientation (Tuesday), followed by up to eight (8) paid training shifts within the first two months, scheduled based on operational needs. To remain active in PRN status, employees are expected to work at least two shifts per month, with each shift lasting a minimum of five (5) hours, unless otherwise approved.Salary for this role. Starting wage is based on experience and company equity. Paid bi-weekly.$21.46 - $32.19 per hourPRN Pay Differential: In addition to the base hourly rate, PRN employees receive a 10% PRN pay differential. This additional compensation recognizes the flexibility required of PRN staff and their availability to cover shifts on an as-needed basis, including unexpectedShift Differential Pay. The Day weekend shift differential is paid from 7 am to 3 pm on Saturdays and Sundays only; the Swing shift differential is paid from 3 pm to 11 pm; and the Overnight shift differential is paid from 11 pm - 7 amDay Weekend (Sat, Sun): $1.50/hourSwing Weekday (Mon-Thurs): $1.50/hourSwing Weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun): $2.75/hourOvernight Weekday (Monday - Thursday): $2.75/hourOvernight Weekend (Friday, Saturday & Sunday): $4.00/hourEssential Functions:Assist in the development and implementation of treatment and disposition plans.Provide crisis and behavior management/de-escalation interventions as needed, according to state regulations, training, and established best practices.Develop and facilitate daily psychoeducational groups.Collaborate with clients to identify personal strengths, un-met needs, and interventions that will support clients in regaining a sense of control.Assist with intake procedures including decontamination, documentation, inventory of client belongings, and orientation to the facility.Assist with discharge procedures.Conduct individual check-ins with clients and provide advocacy to ensure that the treatment team has a comprehensive understanding of each client’s self-identified needs.Provide trauma-informed interventions that minimize harm and restrictive measures while empowering clients to share responsibility in their recovery plan.Provide group and individual education to clients based on each client’s individual treatment plan andgoals.Maintain a safe therapeutic environment that emphasizes recovery, resilience and building a sense of community.Facilitate regular meal services for clients.Maintain a clean and orderly unit.Complete needed care coordination tasks for their assigned role.Requirements:Bachelor's degree in the human services field or an unrelated bachelor's degree and one year of equivalent experience.Must possess a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain one within 30 days of hire.Effective written and verbal communication skills.Effective problem-solving skills.Professional and timely communication, assessing and describing client observations to applicable staff.Ability to assess crisis situations and intervene appropriately.Understanding and ability to work with differing behavioral health presentations.Effective organizational skills.Preferred: BilingualRequired Vaccination and TB Test.At AMHR, the health and safety of our clients and staff are our top priorities.
