Job summary

ChristianaCare is recruiting for a Full-time Specimen Processing Technician in the General Laboratory on the Midnight Shift. The role requires working every other weekend and 2–3 holidays per year, handling specimen processing, LIS input, and quality checks.

Ideal candidates have a High School diploma and prior specimen processing experience. The position emphasizes accuracy, safety, and teamwork in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

Qualifications

• High School diploma required.
• Previous specimen processing experience preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
• Knowledge of specimen processing
• Knowledge of Microsoft applications
• Knowledge of office equipment and machines
• Knowledge of a keyboard (typing or computer)
• Attention to detail and ability to maintain focus despite distractions
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks to support testing of specimens
• Ability to identify patient and match specimen with request
• Strong verbal communication skills
• Ability to follow written and verbal procedures
• Knowledge of safety procedures

Responsibilities

• Sorts laboratory specimens and request slips for accuracy of test orders and correct specimen types.
• Inputs test orders in Lab Information System (LIS). Prints and affixes identification labels to incoming specimens.
• Prioritizes incoming work to meet stated turnaround times for stat testing.
• Processes multiple specimens from invasive procedures with drug administration on a series of time intervals.
• Prepares and sends out specimens to national reference labs and charges per guidelines.
• Verifies PowerChart requisition/specimen match for ED and in-house samples.
• Registers outpatient drop-off samples in Soarian and selects correct encounter.
• Audits daily to ensure test order accuracy.
• Handles telephone requests courteously and clarifies requisitions as needed.
• Follows LIS downtime procedures and maintains equipment and supplies.
• Performs other duties as required.
• Adheres to safety rules and reports hazards to supervisor.
