Position Summary, Duties And Responsibilities

The Middle School Sports Program Supervisor provides on-site and program-level leadership for a public recreation middle school sports program. This position assists with planning, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating practices, games, officials, facilities, equipment, and participant services. The supervisor helps ensure safe, organized, inclusive, and high-quality sports programming that promotes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and positive youth development.



  • Coordinate daily operations for assigned middle school sports programs, including practices, games, clinics, tournaments, and related activities.

  • Provide direction, support, and on-site supervision to coaches, officials, scorekeepers, volunteers, and other program staff.

  • Monitor program sites to ensure activities are running safely, on time, and in accordance with department policies, league rules, safety procedures, and participant conduct expectations.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for participants, parents/guardians, coaches, officials, school staff, recreation staff, and the public during assigned programs.

  • Respond to questions, concerns, complaints, injuries, incidents, discipline matters, weather issues, and other program needs in a timely and professional manner.

  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and sportsmanship-centered program environment for participants of varying skill levels and backgrounds.

  • Inspect facilities, fields, courts, gyms, and equipment before and after activities; report unsafe conditions, maintenance concerns, or supply needs promptly.

  • Prepare, maintain, and submit accurate records, including attendance, schedules, incident reports, accident reports, staff hours, equipment inventories, and program updates.

  • Assist with setup, cleanup, opening, closing, and securing of program sites as assigned.

  • Support program evaluation and recommend improvements to enhance safety, organization, participation, customer service, and overall program quality.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications


  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Knowledge of youth sports programming, middle school athletics, recreation operations, league rules, safety practices, and positive youth development principles.

  • Prior experience in recreation programming, youth sports, coaching, officiating, facility supervision, camp leadership, or a related field preferred.

  • Prior lead worker, supervisory, scheduling, or staff coordination experience preferred.

  • Ability to make sound decisions, solve problems, and respond appropriately to injuries, emergencies, weather concerns, conflicts, and behavior issues.

  • Strong communication, organization, customer service, conflict resolution, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to interpret, explain, and enforce department policies, league rules, safety expectations, and codes of conduct tactfully and consistently.

  • Ability to work independently with general direction and exercise good judgment in a busy public recreation environment.

  • First Aid, CPR, AED, concussion awareness, and/or other safety certifications may be required or must be obtained within the timeframe established by the department.


Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

This position requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods; move between program areas; demonstrate or assist with sport-related activities as needed; bend, stoop, kneel, reach, carry, push, and pull; set up and take down equipment; and respond quickly to participant or site safety needs. Must be able to lift and carry program equipment up to 30 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.


Work Environment

Work is performed in office, indoor, and outdoor recreation settings, including gyms, fields, courts, parks, schools, community centers, and other program sites. The position may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, crowds, athletic equipment, uneven surfaces, and active game or practice environments. The position requires frequent interaction with youth participants, parents/guardians, coaches, officials, volunteers, staff, school personnel, and the public. Work schedules may include afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays, and seasonal program dates.
