The upcoming 2025-26 school year is exciting for YSCS because we will start serving students in 5th grade and become a full 5-8 school!

Who are we?

Young Scholars Charter School (YSCS) is a free, lottery-based, open-enrollment charter school serving students from across Philadelphia in grades 5-8. The mission of Young Scholars is to provide a personalized middle school education that challenges, engages, and prepares all students to passionately pursue their dreams and lead a life of active citizenship. Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a passionate, hardworking Middle School Social Studies and Reading & Language Arts Teacher to join our team. The role involves working with 5th grade students, teaching both Reading & Language Arts and Social Studies. YSCS offers a unique and innovative environment with a dual homeroom partner structure, regular coaching, and extensive elective and sports offerings. All staff members are encouraged to participate in decision-making processes and influence the school's direction.

Responsibilities

1. Plan and deliver excellent instruction, maximizing classroom time.
2. Develop detailed lesson plans, materials, homework, and assessments aligned with state standards and school goals.
3. Be punctual and submit lesson plans on time.
4. Provide differentiated learning opportunities to support each student's growth.
5. Set and reinforce clear expectations for student engagement.
6. Continuously improve through feedback and coaching.
7. Collaborate with colleagues to enhance student engagement and achievement.
8. Reinforce positive behavior and hold students accountable using school-wide systems.
9. Engage with families regularly through calls and meetings.
10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Why Work at YSCS?

All teachers manage a roster of about 85-100 students with an average class size of 25, fostering stronger relationships. Teachers are responsible for one grade and one content area, becoming experts in their subjects. With at least 120 minutes of daily prep and common planning time, collaboration is prioritized. Staff influence the school's direction, including schedule and calendar decisions, which are developed by teachers for teachers.
