Job description

School Overview:

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent coeducational, college preparatory day school serving grades Pre-Kindergarten (including 2 year olds) through 12. The school has a current enrollment of approximately 900 students and 180 employees located on two campuses in Suffolk, Virginia. Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a positive, enthusiastic, and proactive educator, with a passion for working with middle school students in grades 6-8. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in teaching science through the inquiry-based methodology, as well as knowledge of basic earth, physical and life sciences. This position requires collaborative work with colleagues in the Science Department and across grade levels. We seek candidates who possess the following education, experience, capabilities and qualities:

Essential Functions:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver creative and effective instructional and interactive lesson plans that lead to active learning experiences and enhance a student’s knowledge of science.
  • Identify and implement varied instructional resources and methods to meet students’ diverse learning needs.
  • Lead students to develop critical thinking and process skills.
  • Collaborate regularly with the science department colleagues and grade-level teams to ensure a cohesive and aligned program.
  • Integrate technology and a variety of teaching methods to enhance learning and student engagement.
  • Participate in department, division and whole school meetings as well as professional development activities.
  • Serve as an advisor to a small group of students and hold conferences with students and parents.
  • Provide mentoring, tutoring, and academic support for students as needed.
  • Communicate proactively with parents about student progress.
  • Ability to teach virtually via Zoom, Google Hangouts or other virtual learning technology applications to provide educational services via remote learning for a reasonable time should the school be closed for an extended period of time as a result of an unforeseen event (i.e. pandemic, pervasive health emergency or other catastrophe out of the control of the school).
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head of Middle School.

Required Education/Background:

  • Bachelor’s degree or postgraduate degree in Science, Science Education or related field.
  • Current teaching certification with a concentration in Science is required.
  • Holds a current teaching certification in the state of Virginia or in a reciprocal state.
  • Proficiency in technology is essential including use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and the use of SmartBoards and digital projectors preferably in an Apple environment. Proficiency with Google Educational Apps, and Blackbaud preferred but not required.
  • Prior teaching experience is preferred.
